widowed/divorced which name ??

33bus

master brummie
morning All what name does a widow or divorced woman use if she gets married again does she use her maiden or ex- married name Ive thought about this for some time since I discovered that my g/father was buried under my fathers name obviously mistakes happen but I wondered what the legal position was cheers Tom:)

I have wondered about the maiden name versus widowed name too, 33. I am unclear whether a member of my family who had been widowed was married under her maiden name in 1825 gave her maiden name or that of her 1st husband.

I remarried with my married name,I was a divorcee but you can tell my maiden name from the name of my father.
I know that divorcees often revert to their maiden name but why would a widow.

Hi Alberta it looks like it could be very expensive trying to fathom some female rellies with birth certificates thanks for you quick reply cheers Tom:)

For those of us that do lookups this can be a right nightmare and i think it is down to the fact that there are no hard and fast rules, it is completely down to the womans own choice. If she gets divorced and hates the blokes guts she will more than likely use her maiden name but then she might think, well, everyone knows me as this name and not my maiden name, see what i mean, i could go on and on, and that is what makes it so hard. If you know they have had a surname change then you know to look out for it but if you don't know OMG

bren

I agree with Bren, then there is also the case where as with one of one of my Grans , the new husband took her widowed name and changed his, only to revert back to his own name when they divorced and he married again.
Try sorting the children out from those marrages if you dare ...:confused2::confused2:lollol

In the days when you did not have to supply pieces of paper to officials anything could happen.
Searching for a relative of my husbands, they started life as Castello, became Costello and then for a couple of censii became Barton which was the maiden name of the wife.
Mind you when you were flitting from address to address keeping one step ahead of the rent man it perhaps helped to have a new name LOL.

I think that all researchers on this site have encountered difficulties when a widow remarries and all her children take the husbands name only to marry in their own name later in life.

It all adds to the fun.
