I am interested in the Whitehouse family of Birmingham. My GG Grandfather was Ephraim Whitehouse, hairdresser, of Congrave Street. He was born in 1815. I am struggling with this line because the name is so common in Birmingham.

Yes that is him, thankyou. The ecclesiastical parish should help me to trace back from him - I had been looking in the wrong one. I will be able to make another trip to Birmingham now, to trace back from Ephraim. I find the record office there a bit confusing compared to others, and last time I went there was nobody around to help with finding things. With the right parish I should get on better.
Thankyou, Jo

Thanks again. I had pieced together some of this information, but I wasnt sure if it was correct. Having the correct parishes is very useful. This is the only branch of my family that comes rom a city -villages are much easier -they only have one parish!

I'm trying to track down ancestors of Elsie May Whitehouse (b. 1883 Balshall Heath). Her father was Frederick Whitehouse (b. c1860, B'ham) who was a spoon and fork manufacturer and lived in Edgbaston Road and Coppice Road in 1891 and 1901. I cannot find him prior to that apart from his marriage in 1881 in Alcester, Worcs. I'm trying to locate him prior to that and work out who his parents were. Any ideas?

this is my best guess

job whitehouse 37 casters lab.
emma 38
frederick 21 casters lab.
mary a 7

all b. bham (ages of job and emma should be 10 yrs more!)

1871 living in aston

job whitehouse 36 lab. casting shop
emma 37
frederick 11
rebecca 9
?? whitehouse son 1

1861 moland st. bham

job whitehouse 27 builders lab
emma 27 wood screw maker
frederick 1

not sure if these are correct but certainly a possibility

if this is correct job and emma were married at st. martins bham on 5 oct 1856. he was a brass caster living green st. his father was job whitehouse a screw forger.
wife was emma byfield living green st. her father thomas byfield. a porter.

Thanx, that was one of the possibilities I'd found. I guess I need to obtain Fred and Laura's marriage certificate to see if that confirms the info.
