Where is This ? 64

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
This should be no problem to some of our older members, but some of the younger ones may struggle a bit.

See how crafty I am, now most of the women won't answer because of claims of being too young to remember.

Is it the junction of Edgbaston Street and Dudley Street, taken from the (then) new Smallbrook Queensway bridge over Dudley Street?

That is a teaser, Phil. First thoughts were that it would be the Big Top, but that late-1940s Midland Red bus has a lot of dents along the nearside roof domes, which I would have thought dated it to the late 50s at the earliest.
That kiosk looks familiar, but how about the three old-fashioned telephone kiosks (nobody there needed a mobile, did they?)? I would guess the picture was taken after older properties were demolished, to clear a site for the wholesale markets.
I left Brum in March 1959, so I didn't see much of subsequent changes, although I was always interested (and usually horrified).
So my guess is somewhere round Sherlock Street.
The suspense is awesome.

Is it the 'Big Top' site top of the Bull Ring.?

I told you it was easy, solved at the first attempt. The big top site New Street on a snowy winters day. As you can now see from the road sign. Well done "brummie nick."

Like myself, I think you tend to over Analise things. Often the first thing that pops into your mind is right. Saying that I also have a problem with the photo. It says it was taken in 1955, I thought that the big top had been built on by then.Perhaps someone will tell me when building was completed.

Notice how the women pretended not to know it, and got it wrong so as not to give their age away.
