Where is This? 60

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
This photo was taken in the 1940's, but I recognised the BSA sign so it still must have been in use until at least the middle to late fifties. So all you ex DZ members where is this shop.

Sorry that should read Shuffy's

Darby

If by Shuffy's you mean that wonderful establishment of Shovelbottoms Ltd on The corner of Ladypool Rd and Taunton Rd, then you are correct. You are too good at these Balsall Heath ones (where did you live). I'll have to move to another district with my next try.

Phil,
You have found me out, I spent all my childhood and a lot more in that area, I lived a couple of roads away from Shuffy's as we used to call it, keep the good work up.
Regards.

Well if you are in the same age group as me you will remember M & J's just down the Ladypool rd from there, and the outlandish clothes they sold there in the 60's.

Yes Phil M & J Fashions I think they were called, The assistant in the shop always addressed you as Chief, I guess I have just admitted that I bought stuff from there although not very often.

Dad used to call it the Teddy Boy Shop.

Further up from there was Tintern House where I first saw T shirts.

Do you remember Fisher's the junk shop on the corner of Ladypool Road and Runcorn Road.

Darby & Astonian

I thought M&J was a wonderful shop, I have to admit the quality left a lot to be desired but what great gear.

A relative and I purchased an orange jeans and jean jacket combo from there in about 1960/61. To my knowledge these were the only clothes that ever got anybody sent home to change out of, at Dennis Rd SM School.

Darby,
I suppose you dad was happy if you shopped at Tony's at the other end of Ladypool Rd. (see photo)

I'll be honest I have no great recollection of the junk shop you mention even though I must have passed it twice a day for four years. It must have been next to the builders yard.

Phil

It must have been next to the builders yard.

Phil

Before the builders yard there was a row of very old cottages that stretched up as far as the Brighton, I remember them being demolished, what a pity, I think today they would have been preserved.

Darby.

Darby

I don't remember the cottages, then of course I never ventured that far up Ladypool Rd until I started at Dennis Rd in about 1958. Was the builders yard called E.C.Hall ?

Phil

Darby

When the site in later years changed to a car sales, am I right in thinking this is where King Kong stood after his time in Manzoni Gardens in the city.

I know he eventually moved to Digbeth, but I seem to have a memory of him in Ladypool Rd next to the Brighton Hotel.

Phil

Phil,

By this time I was married and had left the area, I don't remember the site as a car sales.

The house in which I was born in Runcorn Road as far as I know is still standing as is the house in Newport Road where I spent my childhood.

John

You may well be right, as far as I am aware there have been no major alterations to either Newport Rd or Runcorn Rd.
