Where is This ? #200

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
Right lets give this on a whirl, this time I require the location and what the building is. or should I say was. It should then be no problem telling me what replaced it.

Is it the corner of Livery Street and Snow Hill, showing the Gt Western Hotel at Snow Hill Station?

It wasn't a bank, but a little printing did go on here on the top floor I think, but not for any journalistic or literary reasons and it wasn't much to do with the main purpose of the building.

phil ;
i think it was further along on constution hill like some one pointed out about the clock i first impullse about the clock i have seen and pased many yr=ears ago ; if no one comes up before me i wil concentrate on that clock because i know i have pased in yester years

There are boards outside the building all around the clock and these have writing on them. This reminds me of travel and timetables etc. If it was a travel office, issuing tickets (printed on the premises) etc I would say it was near Victoria Sq, maybe Colmore Row - Town Hall end. So it would be a large booking office, possibly for international travel, long voyages on boats, built before airlines came into being. Viv.

We are still not getting near, you will kick yourself when you realise what and where it is. I will tell you this much there is a photo of this building is already on this forum. There is also a photo of what replaced it and furthermore there are several photos of what that building was converted and expanded to.

just noticed your post viv and as phil said not near the town hall forget my guess lol..

The blacked out name right on top of the building suggests a hotel of larger tavern/inn. And I'll say it's New Street. Viv.

The telephone accounts department and where the old telgrammes office was in newhall st
if i recall they always had a clock in the streetwindow
off great charles street and turn down new hall sreet
best wishes astonian

Hi phil;
you are sure gving us a wild card as they say ;it cannot be in the city can it as most of us have said all within the city limit.s
surely ; st pauls square ;is my last choice of trying ;
i will wait for all the boffins with there reference maps and books ; co.s i do not have or use them ;
my brain cannot think any more ; have a nice day ; common guys lets get this one sorted ; astonian

There seem to be an awful lot of lights around the building, so I'm guessing a public building of some sort, maybe a Police Station. Steelhouse Lane?

No not a police station, and it is definitely in the city. Nobody has come close enough yet for me to at least say you are getting warm. I could say that the area where this building was has much changed today, but there again what area of the city centre hasn't?

Phil

A little clue, this building was originally used by a private company that was bought out by Birmingham Council and they continued in use for the same purpose until it was moved to the locality of the Council House. Then they were first rented and then purchased outright by the concern that I am after and used for an entirely different purpose.

Jayel

You are on the right trail what was the most well known building on Old Square at the time of this photo prior to the one you mention?

Phil

Was it Berlin House, Old Square? Although I'm not sure what the connection with Birmingham Council would be. A firm called Jevons & Mellor, Wool Importers and Merchants ran their business from there at one time
