Where is This? 110

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
A real easy one, this view hasn't changed that much over the years. So no clues at all with this one.

Not sure Phil. But is it the Coventry Rd. by Barrows Lane?

Happy New Year anyway Ann

That finger post states Wolverhampton this way ,
So i think its errrrrrrrrrrmmmmm still thinking .......... ragga

i would say itsjust further up from the blues ground, coventry road. harley

Ragga,

If that sign post says Wolverhampton, I am way off mark. But can you give me the name of your optician?

Ann

ann
On looking at a very enlarged image I think I tend to agree that one of the signs could say wolverhampton, just, but i also tend to think that one of the lower ones could say Knowle ! That poses a problem
mike

I said no hints or tips on this one, but as I am off to celibrate Hogmanay now. I'll tell you this much, I don't know what the sign says, but being where it is. I doubt it says Wolverhampton. See you next year and have a good one everybody.

Phil

Mike, Now I need the name of your optician too. I can't make the sign out at all. If it does say Knowle, that might tie in with my other thought, which was the Warwick Rd. boundary, just close to Lincoln Rd?

Ann

phil...the 3rd sign on the post looks like it may say springhill and the 5th sign looks like it says circle....but if as you say it has not changed much as usual i doubt if i am right...

happy new year to you..

lyn

Is it opposite Acocks Green Laundry at the Olton boundary? The signpost with a ring on the top looks more likely a Warwickshire County one than a Birmingham Corporation who favoured a spike and ball finial topping.

Phil
this looks a good'n! Is it the junction on the Warwick Rd and Tyesley Station approach where the old 36 bus crossed?

Warwick Road / Stockfield Road Junction ??

But that finger post is bugging me
Does the fingers say Solihull and Shirley and i still say one
is Wolverhampton ?? ragga ....

Good morning all, or is it afternoon. Please forgive my late rising, to be honest I wouldn't be up now, but lunch is ready.

Anyway the first correct answer was by Ann B, and that is Warwick Rd at the Birmingham boundary close to Lincoln Rd. As I said it hasn't changed that much today. Well done Ann B.

Yes it does say Wolverhampton, but it would be a bit of a convoluted way to reach it from there in that direction. I suppose you would have to keep going west until you hit the Wolverhampton Rd.

Mind you though traffic priorities would have been different back then. So a lot of routes would look strange to us today.

Maybe the Wolverhampton name is listed because of Olton Boulevard and then Shaftmoor Lane being the accepted start of the Outer Circle although Streetsbrook Road and then Robin Hood Lane turned out to be more popular.

The Warwick Road is the A41 (still) which goes via Wolverhampton to Birkenhead and being the boundary the signpost acts as a milestone, but you can't-or at lease I SUPPOSE you can't-have the hoi polloi going through Birmingham City Centre?

Richie, quite correct it is the A41 which used to go from London to Birkenhead, so the next town after Birmingham would be Wolverhampton, therefore signposted when you reach Birmingham.
We tend to forget that with Birmingham Councils continuing obsession with trying to prevent the car travelling into or through Birmingham we now have only one 'A' road which goes through the City [A38] and that is buried! All the others confuse everyone from 'out of town' by stopping short of the City. Like the A's 34;41;47 which all used to traverse the City Centre. As well as the minor A roads which terminated in the centre, like the 426;435 etc. Progress eh!
