Where is This? 105

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
Right, I hope you haven't got this photo in your book John. It looks like another easy one, I have no doubt that some one will soon sort it out. This time I want the name of the street and approximately from where the photo was taken.

Is it Smallbrook Street, with the Scala cinema the building with the jutting out canopy. Photo taken from John Bright Street?

New Street, Newmans the Tobacconist, Cigar Importer and Pipe Makers was 106 New Street. The shop is centre of the picture with the street light outside

gfredol,

Correct in every detail New Street taken in 1901, if you look to the left you can just make out the canopy of the Theatre Royal that closed the year after this photo.

You may be interested to see this from Newmans house magazine June 1921

Seems they were still there in 1908.

What a marvelous piece of history. I wonder what the thrilling adventure was?

Don't know what the adventure was but have the rest of the June issue 12 pages and a couple of photographs of their Edbaston St Pipe factory.

Were should I post them on the site. Your advise would be welcome. New to the Game

If I were going to post some information about an old shop of this type I would do it on the Shops thread. You might be surprised to find that other people may have further information.

Sorry about the delay in answering, but I missed your last post.
