Where is this? 102

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
What was built in place of these old buildings when they were torn down. Not a solution I usually agree with, but in this case it looks the correct solution. Though I can't agree with pulling houses down for the purpose of what replaced them.

Phil the houses on the right remind me of the house a friend lived in, in Aston which I gather are no longer there. But I don't know what replaced those, probably apartments. Great photos, the middle one looks like a Priory, very nice. Mo

Mo, its funny you should say about the middle photo looking like a priory. I was going to suggest Upper Priory by the Old Square as I have a photo of similar looking houses.

No sorry, not the Rotunda

Sakura,

As you say, not quite early enough.

Phil

Sorry people none of the aforementioned places. As I said at the start, Sakura and Judy were near to cracking it.

The building on the right reminds me of this one, labelled as 23 court, park st. Am not sure which park st it is though.

You are all thinking "building" when you should be thinking area or location. This area was a part of a clearance plan suggested by a certain 19th century gentleman. The area was described as "one of the most congested and wretched slums of Birmingham".

Some of you are close

Phil are you thinking of MANZONI GARDENS, BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE
on the Southern Corner of Park Street and Bordesley Street, Digbeth. Mo

Going back to the Priory, was it where the old tram depot was constructed off Colmore Row. Or even the construction of Colmore Row before the trams I guess!!!! Mo

PMC 147 Quote 'The area was described as "one of the most congested and wretched slums of Birmingham"'. Thats an interesting clue, what letter does it begin with?

Some of you are giving part of the correct answer, the photo's obviously do not cover the whole area that was demolished under this clearance plan. You are still thinking in one location or building terms, but we are not talking a whole district or ward rather just part of a district.

One more clue, This is a partly a very popular shopping area today, another part has other uses.

Phil

I think it's Corporation Street, which involved the demolition of Lichfield Street, etc.

Judy,

I award the Blue Ribbon to you, as you past the winning line first, just one minute ahead of Mikejee. Well done to you.

Corporation St was cut in 1876 as part of Joseph Chamberlain’s improvement plant for the city, and as I have previously said to rid Birmingham of its most congested and wretched slum area.
