Not really a where is - the location is Stratford Road, Monkspath. This monstrosity stands on the site of a former Pub. It is opposite the end of Marshall Lake Road, Shirley and diagonally opposite where Archers Garage was.

I am compiling some photographs to send to my BiL in Oz to bring him up to date and need the name of the pub before I can send it.

Bernie,
The pub was the George and Dragon.

was in there on its last night, not very eventful, it was not the best pub by then but it was a pub all the same

the last pub to stand there was the dallas exchange, it made way for this tile and bathroom shop a couple of years ago. Regards Pete.

Thanks Pete - Though I did not make it clear in my post my BiL (now deceased) last lived in UK in 1963 so the George and Dragon is the Pub he would have known. Was the Dallas Exchange a Pub I always assumed it was an eatery with drinks?

hi, sorry didnt see all of your post, didnt realise there was another pub on this site before the dallas as ive lived in and around shirley for years ,only 3 in 63.

Did it become Calenders Bar or something in the 80's?
It may even have been a TFI Friday's at some point too

I think you may be correct In Exile but that was later than the period in which I was interested but never as far as I can recall a TGIF's but I could be wrong.

Didn't TGIF's replace the Crown that is now the Harvester almost next door to the Plough further out from the George & Dragon at Monkspath?

Hi Mike - I think that it was Jefferson's though it may have been a TGFI before that. My son and his friends had too much to drink one night so left their cars overnight [at Jefferson's]. Next day when they collected them they were gleaming. Jefferson's used to wash and clean cars of people having their breakfast there and the guys doing it had assumed the cars were parked there for that reason. The lads made a clean getaway ;)

Like it Bernie, made a clean getaway!

I try Mike - well my kids and wife always say I am trying and assume that means the same thing?

Hi Bernie Just joined the forum after being away in Oz for a number of years - Yes it was the George and Dragon I lunched there - 'cos I was apprenticed at Archers, wouldnt mind some photos of Archers if you can spare me some copies.Shame the old pub has gone little bit of history lost !

Sorry Pierre - I have no photos of Archers but do recall when it was [Standard] Triumph dealers. One of the Archers (Tony?) looked down his nose at me when I went there to buy a second hand Herald. My first Wife's Uncle (Stan Pagett) worked there for very many years as a Foreman in the workshops. Malcolm Bragg (Funeral Directors) may have some as they lived next to the garage (well next to the two (?) tied houses owned by Archers. Old man Bragg always refused to sell the house to them.

Hi
My grandparents ran the George and Dragon mentioned here in the 1950's (George and Edna-anne 'nan' Wood). We are trying to trace a picture of this pub. My mum has more descriptive info of life in this pub and its surroundings but we would love a picture. we think it was run by Ansells. rperrin_98@yahoo.com

Hello,I worked at the Lucas Research Centre from 1979 till 1983 and we had a pathway through to the George & Dragon i spent many happy hours in there.Jim

My ex inlaws ran the pub for a few years, my ex met and married their daughter - Dianne - while he was a part time barman there. They moved on to run the Dog and Partridge in Priory Road (there in 1957). I always thought it funny that, although I never met them, I can remember my sister having her wedding reception at the D&P and me being told off for playing on the bowling green! My ex agreed that would be typical!!!

That reminds me I was once in the grounds of the D&P but cannot for the life of me recall why although I had an Uncle who lived close by (The Haven - close not pub) off School Road) so it may have been the wedding of one of his children?
