Hi Lyn,

The little voice at the back of my head is saying the Victoria Law Courts in Corporation Street but I am guessing really.

The information with the photo I have which is the same as yours. tells me that it is the Rose & Crown on Lichfield St (Corporation St) shortly before its demolition. It also states that it was between Old Square and Newton St which is shortly above the site of the Victoria Law Courts.

As a matter of interest I have another photo of a pub on Lichfield St before the demolition The Old Farriers Arms taken c1880. I have no idea of the location of this one other than Lichfield St (Corporation St) Perhaps someone could tell us where it was located.

The 1878 directory lists it as just the Farriers Arms there doesn't seem to be another one in the street). It is at no 123 , which is at least 4 buildings away from old square on the north side . Approx marked in red on map. the rose & Crown is approximately where the blue mark is at no 101

Thanks for that, as a matter of interest does it indicate where the Rose & Crown was. Just wondering if the info with the photo was right or if Lyn was correct in the first place.

Phil
The rose & Crown was at no 101. between Newton st and Lancaster st. Have altered map and wording in previous post to include it

Right then, thanks it seems that Lyn was quite right when she said it was demolished so the Victoria Courts could be built. It just shows as I have always said you cant believe what is printed in some of these photographic history books. They do seem to have a bad habit of getting it wrong.

Phil

phil...i look at your pic and mine and still find it hard to imagine that the city centre once looked liked that....amazing....

Just a little further down Lichfield Street was The Gullet one of the most notorious parts of Birmingham. This was one of the reasons that it was all demolished to clear out the area. If you type The Gullet into the search box you will find some early writings on this area of Birmingham. It wasn't a nice place to live. Here are a couple of images of The Gullet with the even more notorious Hope & Anchor pub on the corner.

lyn

crikey...my memory is better than i thought...i was sure i had posted at pic of the gullet last year (june) and here it is....must say i wouldnt like to meet these folk in a dark alley...lol

“I went to the Gullet again -
I find as many openings - dark passages
back courts in this Gullet, as probably there is
in the Gullet of a Shark. In one of these I
entered a house - I saw six females
at card playing, and all of them
almost in a statue of nudity - Oh!
How serious, and how responsible is the work
of a town missionary

Lyn,

You've actually got a photo there (post No. 20) of undercover operatives for The Salvation Army....
