Weston shop Coleman St

Trueblue

Brummie babby
I was wondering if anyone remembered the shop at 38,Coleman St. My father was born there and it was run by Mary Ann Weston. Any info much appreciated

Hi Trueblue,

I'm afraid by the time I moved into Nechells Coleman St was just going under the demolition hammer in preparation for the new Maisonettes, the person you really need to speak to is an old resident of the street GER22VAN (Ernie) who still pops on site occasionally. He lived there until it was demolished I believe. Perhaps he may see this post and be able to help you.

Phil

Below is a map provided at some time on the forum of Coleman st at the time of the clearances . It shows no 38. In the 1940 Kellys, Mary Ann Weston at 38 is listed as a dairy

I lived at 5/35 , Weston,s shop ( Dairy ) was three houses away at the front. They sold cheese, milk, cakes (eccles my favorites with recyled
cake filling in the middle. My memory is otherwise a bit vague now I am sorry to say.
I do not know of any photograph of this shop that may have been posted .I am sorry that I could not be of more help to you.

This is from the 1904 Kelly's Directory Of Birmingham.

This looks as though Mr WESTON may have had a shop across the road from the later shop.

Hi Mike, sorry to bother you with this, my great great grandfather lived at no 31 Coleman street according to the 1891 census with his 10 children and wife. He was a Stone Mason and 2 of his sons were smithy's on the census it says striker next to smith does this mean they struck the metal or they were on strike, anyone? Do you know were no 31 would be on your map or was it an earlier map?
