Weoley Castle Pub ,

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
Does Any-body Have Any Memories Of The Weoley Castle Pub
In Weoley Castle Estate , Today I Met An Old Licencee By The Name Of Graham , And I Was Wondering If Any body Remembers Him
Some Forty Years Ago I Myself Have Passed Many Times But Never Had A Pint In There He Also Told Me He Userd To RunThe Dog And Partridge Up The Bristol Rd Selly Oak ,And One Or Two Other Pubs ,He ,s Now An Elderly Gentleman Living Out Hrer In Worc,And We Spoke About Another Pub
Called The Caledonian , The Next Pub Up From The Castle ,And It Was
An Ansells House , He Said They Demolished It Because Nobody Went In It
And They Built A Garage On The Site He Said He Doe,snt Know Whether That Garage Is till There Or Not ,But He Also Told Me There Was A Farm Up That
Part Of The Woods I Said I Did Not Know
So There For I,m Asking Any Fellow Members Recall Any Of The The Two
Locations , The Farm Or The Caledoneion Pub And Any Memories
Come To Mind

Hi Astonian
The other pub was the California..after they demolished the garage they built the Bingo hall..My Father in Law used to go in the California all the time.. used to play for the darts team years ago:)

When I worked at the Colebrook Shirley the landlords were Sandra and Graham. They ran the Weoley castle fora number of years, during the 80s till '92.The assistant manager was a lady called Edna, she followed them to the Colebrook too.

We used to live in Oxley grove off Gregory avenue when I was a kid in the 1950's , we used to climb over the fence at the Raven & get the empties out of the crates & then take them back in the outdoor to 'get the money back on the empties' :D :D one day when we took some in the barmaid said wait here a minute & she went to speak to a bloke down the end of the bar, apparently they had started to mark the labels in order to catch us out:redface: We avoided that outdoor for months after.
Outside the Weoley pub we used to play people up by putting an old purse on the pavement tied to fishing line & then tug it away just as they tried to pick it up :D Across the road from the pub was still open farmland back then until they started to build blocks of flats in the late 50's

HI WESSEX
I know gramem and sandra from way back when he was at the cole
if my memory serves me rightly they came with us to dublin
along with another twenty eight managers to dublin
to see if we could learn a thing or too from the irish
some of the gathers here brought some idea,s back and tried there
methords but to no prevail
for the starters in ireland when ordering you guiness the bar person
would pull your pints and would trek down the other end of the bar
serve some-one else and come back to you asking for payment
but i,m afraid over here you do that the person whom ordered
the round would have walked away with the drinks ans swore blacks
is white and that he payed you for that round over there
the clientel are very trusting also with ash trays they was cleanrd out
on every table in the pub and taken away and on picking up the ash
tray was emediatly replaced with a fresh one
i will try and dig this photo out and put it on the thread
some-body will reconise some gathers from different pubs of there
own grae,-and sandra was a very lvely and bubbl people good managers
regarding graham from he old castle whom is in is old age
recently got married a couple of months ago to a lovely lady
named jackie she is years younger than grae; but graeis still active
still loves is drink and he in our local most nights espeialy sundays
we often talk about variuos gathers and pubs
and how do i know grae so well we used to meet at meeting
and grae; and jackie are my next door neibours ,
have a nice day every body best wishes astonian ;;;

Dublin drinking establishments could teach the world how to run a pub.I love the way a pensioner doesn't need to stand at the bar for service, they just take their seat and the bar person will go to them, and give them waiter service...very civilised.

Yes good service but with the financial state Guiness is about £5 a pint, the place has gone really expensive. I would really like to see the west coast but will have to wait for the pound to get stronger.
I drive past the Weoley Castle on the way to the QE sometimes but never had the pleasure of visiting. Looks like a big Ansells estate pub ,a bit large for modern needs so many are sold off for conversion or developement.

hi ray
first of all glad to see you are back with us . yes the dubliners are brillient
at the pr ,bit, and they most certainly put our licence, premises to shame
and its very tru what you are saying regards the old age pensioners
M.B. selected a group of managers to go over and asked us to see how they
ran there pubs , unfortunately some of them let us down
i will not name names of the people nor there pub names, but some of
them only went for there own pleasure, and to be quite honest it was
abit of embarris momemts during our trip there and we were suposed to
have been the embayerters for The M,B brewers of england.
most of them got drunk ,during the day ,and night . and when on tour of the
best pubs in dublin they got drunk , inthe day time and startedto get rowdy
and started singing the irish rebels songs aloud in the pubs
which i think you will agree as you know of the irish scene pub
that the irish folk did not sing any irish rebel songs at all them selves
the irsh people was staring at us as a disgrace and one or
two irish managers asked us all to leave and so we had to get back on the
coach and move on to the next we also did a tour of the guiness factory , and jamesons whishy factory and boy oh boy did they get outof hand
at the end ofthe week it was a disgrace
as i have just previously said on the other thread the brewery wasted there
time and money not one of them carried out the procedure
apart from grae ,sandra , and a couple from kings heath
and one or two but through out the company it never happened
for the brewery , but yet again ray you are quite right theres alot to be said for
the irish commutity.i can say that with my head up high
and not just because i am married to a well known irish family in birmingham
either , they are well known in dublin and naise
but we go over to dublin every three months
ray ; enjoy your day , best wishes astonian ;;

Never been to Eire, but from the info I got years ago they were mainly privately owned pubs, not managed houses.
Breweries killed the British pub scene with their greed and bad planning.Monopolies never work longer term, and even looking at the contrasts of the 11 years since I left the pub trade are huge.
There's very few sucessful 'drinking' pubs around, either they've gone, struggling,or turned to food.
I went in the 'Cheswick Green Inn' the other week, former Pickwick,Shirley,Solihull,it's just a resturant now, they don't want to know about drinkers.Same for country pubs like the Bell at Tanworh.
