WARDELL family

sue wardell

proper brummie kid
Hi, my WARDELL family all lived in the St George area. William WARDELL had a pub The Bulls Head Tavern, 112 Tower St for quite a few years. John had a pawnbrokers 125 Pritchett St up until 1874 when he died his daughter Eliza took over. After 1881 Eliza and her brother Edwin can not be found anywhere!
Joseph WARDELL ran the Oddfellow's Arms in Manchester St. Has anyone any information either about the people, pubs or shop
Regards Sue

Directories show John Wardell having the pawnshop at 125 Pritchett st from 1868. it being run by a Joseph Hall in 1867. In 1872 it is listed as being run by John & Edwin Wardell. In 1876 it is Edwin at 125. In 1878 no 125 Pritchett st is not listed, but Frederick Edwin Wardell (is that the same Edwin?) is listed as pawnbroker at 241 Victoria Road. In 1879-1880 the Victoria road address is a gas fitters, but Mrs Eliza Wardell is pawnbroker at Upper Webster St.(St not numbered, but seems to be near one end, as it is the first business listed). In 1882 upper Webster st is numbered and no 1 is Mrs Ann Harbone, pawnbroker, so I reckon she took over the business.

William is at the Bulls Head (though it is not named), 112 Tower st, from sometime between 1873 and 1876 to between 1900 & 1903.
Joseph is at 29 Manchester st (Oddfellows arms . but not named) from sometime between 1884 and 1888 to 1890, but is not there, or listed anywhere else in 1892. in
1895 he is at 399 New john St West, but 1896-1897 it is a Henry Lee. In 1900-1903 a Harry Wardell is a beer retailer at 399 New john St west . (a Harry Wardell is a shopkeeper at 113 tower st before this.), but he has gone by 1904.

There is a Miss Wardell listed (private address) at 75 Victoria Road from 1878 (no-one is listed there earlier, so don’t know if she is there or not before). There are also other Wardells in trade lists., including a Joseph, who is a tailor, and an Alfred, beer retailer at 202 Newtown row.

Hello Sue.
I have a Harry Wardell in my family tree he married my 2nd great grand aunt Ruth Bevan in about 1888. They were living at 112 Tower st in the 1901 census . It says the bulls head but his occupation is a Gun maker.

Hi John
Harry is one of my rels. His father William is my gt gt uncle. He and his wife Ruth Prosser had two children that unfortunately died. They were living on Bridge St West on the 1911 census. Williams boys seem tto have had pubs or shops at some time. Albert had the shop at 113 Tower Street. Are you on Gene's reunited you can access my tree.
regards Sue

Hi Mike
Thank you for your reply. The Eliza you mention is mine. She is on the census with Edwin as lodgers on the 1881 census thought they have mixed their ages up. The only other Eliza Jane I can find is one in London who comes from B'ham but is in a home for the blind. this may be her at a push! Harry is a relative he is William's son. I am not sure about Fredrick Edwin but no trace after 1881. Joseph lived and died at 34 Hatchett Street. I think the Bull's Head Tavern may of been a beer house instead of a proper pub.

I find that often, when a pub owner is described as “beer retailer”, it is a beerhouse, rather than a full licence, though, in some cases it seems to get a full licence later in life. In this case the pub disappeared around WW1, so probably was always a beerhouse
