I knew a terrific young man, Raymond Ward who lived in Barker Street Ladywood. The family I think were catholic and went to St. Peters church and school.

I went to St. Peters RC Infant and Primary School from about 1949 until 1955.
Raymond Ward who was a good friend through those years, he later, went to St. Patricks RC Senior School on the Dudley Road.
Raymond lived in Garbett Street Ladywood.
His address was could be one of 2 places, 4 back of 39 Garbett Street. Mother Edith M Ward and father George Ward.
Or George H Ward and Rose Ward 2 back of 78 Garbett Street.

I hope that is of some help.

Hi there,
We had a Ward family living near us in Cromwell St. from about 1940-53.
The sons names were Trevor and Harry, who about the mid forties would have been about 4 years old.
Regards John.

I'm in the process of checking out the Ward family for my Hollis relatives...currently have a George Ward, born in Orford, Oxfordshire c1853 who moved to Birmingham by 1875 (married with an Eliza Burns - which was her First marriage name) but moved between Coventry and Birmingham from then till 1901 - could be the same family, but have not yet found his parents......
will let you know of further info...

Hello Astonian, There were 2 Ward families in Garbett Street, they might have been related.
Raymond Ward, I'm not sure as to which of the families he belong to, left St. Peters RC junior school in July 1955 and went to St Patricks RC senior school in September 1955.
I think he might have gone on to Portland Road Comprehensive School in 1958, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Hello Astonian, Amazing! How is he? Where does he live now?
I knew him at St. Peters and at St Patricks.
He was a terrific footballer at the tender age of 8.
I think we were both altar servers at St Peters.

Hello Astonian, Thank you so much for help.
Pity you've lost touch with Ray, but thats life.
I played football with Ray in the playground of St. Peters School using a wooden block for a football. We also played football at Metchley Lane in Harbourne where years later they found an unexploded German land mine under the pitch we played on. And I scored my only goal at Summerfield Park thanks to Ray.
We used to spend most of the summer school holidays at Edgbaston Cricket Ground watching Warwickshire.
In the summer of 1957 we watched our first Test Match, England and the West Indies. It was the first 'Ball by Ball' commentary on the BBC's Third Progamme. England were all out for I think 186, thanks to some fine bowling by Sony Ramadhin, 7 for 47.
We were the only England supporters as far as we could see.
The noise was phenomenal. I know Ray and I will always remember that late day in May.
Here's a small drawing I did of that day.
Thanks very Much, all the best.
