Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

other than on the birth cert i have no proof they actually were married!

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

I think you may be as well to investigate the marriage of Margaret Matilda Wadlow and James Alexander in Aston in 1888. Maybe Margaret and George never married. I have been tying to find Margaret on the 1901 census but not having much success. I found the rest of her family but she is not living with them. Can't find an obvious James Alexander either, but there again, I am not sure who I am looking for.

Perhaps someone else may have better luck. I have searched for Margaret Wadlow and Alexander. I'll keep lookling

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

Do you have access to Ancestry? There are two public family trees sowing Margaret Matilda Wadlow, born 5 November 1870 Aston, died 1956. Parents Edward Charles Wadlow and Margaret Jane Jones.

Can you confirm that these were your Margaret's parents?

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

Margaret Matilda died in Birmingham 1956 age 86 with the surname Alexander.

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

I'm convinced that Margaret was married to James Alexander. Also had a child Violet Matilda Alexander in 1897 and possibly another child in 1888 (died 1945) called Emma Rosetta Wadlow

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

Hi sue alberta & pom only just been able to get back on here you all have been buzy thank you. I have ancestry and had seen that a margaret matilda wadlow was on there married to a james alexander too and have contacted them but haven't heard any thing yet. I really think that this family don't want to be found! no sign of margaret matilda's husband on censuses the same of george richard francis that she had a son with. I might seem really thick but what is (em'ee) is there a possibility that she went off with George Richard Francis and had another family i'm stumped what to look for and where Help!!!!!! they seem to disapear then appear around 1920's in sheep street birmingham.

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

hi just had a quick look and 89 trevor street birmingham was where on of the alexander family were born in 1897 can anyone see for me if they are alexander family were there or if any francis family were there or around in the street. Also can anyone tell me if burney lane birmingham (ward end now come under or by stechford as I'm not from round that area not sure).

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

Burney Lane could be Ward End, Stetchford or Alum Rock. It goes from Alum Rock Road to Stechford Lane. I used to live in Alum Rock.

Maybe James Alexander died, or Margaret left him and changed her name when she met George. (My gran had 8 children and changed her name but never married him!).

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

In the 1881 census there is a George Francis aged 19 living in Nechells Park Rd with his parents. Nechells Park Rd is the main road that Trevor St runs off... in 1891 he is married with a child and living in Belmont Row (Nechells/Aston) but He and his wife are still with his parents...

There is also a James Alexander living with a family in 1891 where the head of the house Mark Mall is an Engine Driver and James 21 is a Foundery worker. The address is 18 Norman St, St Cuthbert (Sorry not sure where in Brum that is, but someone will).
I was wondering if you look at both Margaret's and this James' ages if he was working away from home, because they were both so young when they married had those children ... Then Margaret took up with George whom she had known from childhood...
could that be of help ? Just some ideas...

Hi sue I think you are right as I've been looking into the family tree on ancestry and violet alexander lived in 27 burney rd who died 1956 but trying to find out who also lived there as my husband looked up the road in the a-z to see as it rung a bell and suddenly said that his mom took him when he was little to see an elderly man in burney lane he thought it might be an uncle that would be around 1970's. The lady who's tree I found this info from said it was her first husbands side of the family and margaret matilda would have been his G.G.grandmother. She said that it is very likely that margaret is the person in both families. She hadn't a date of death for james Alexander to see if after this date margaret remarried but looking I can't find a marriage between a wadlow to francis or a marriage from Alexander to a francis so don't think she remarried. I think she just changed her name to francis. (she didn't know we would be able find all this info on computers today!). I've asked if she knows anything more ,so awaiting reply. She lives in assie land so not sure when she'll reply?

Re: margaret matilda wadlow Born: 1870 in Aston

My name is Pauline McDonald (nee Somerfield). My Mother's name was Margaret May Somerfield (nee Alexander). My Grandmother's name was Violet Matilda Alexander. My Great Grandmother's name was Margaret Matilda Alexander (nee Wadlow). My Great Grandfather was James Alexander.

My Great Grandmother married James Alexander on October 1st 1888 (he was 28 years old, she was 18 years old), I have their Marriage Certificate and both their residence's was entered as 10 Trevor Street, she had two children, Emma Rosetta Wadlow born 14.03.1888 and Elizabeth Jane Wadlow born 17.03.1890, I have their birth certificates and the father's name was not mentioned !!! On my Grandmother's (Violet Matilda Alexander) birth certificate the father name James Alexander was entered, his occupation was a bricklayer/labourer.

My Grandmother had my Mother on the 01.11.1918, my Mother was born in the Workhouse at 1 Union Road, Erdington, there was no father's name on the birth certificate. My Grandmother's employment at the time stated that she was a tube worker and either living/working at 42 Sheep Street!!!!

I do not know how long my Grandmother and Mother were in the Workhouse.

A Mr & Mrs Slater took to looking after my Mother, do not know what date this was, they never legally adopted my Mother. I found out by going to the Birmingham Library on the 6th floor that my Grandmother Violet Matilda Aalexander was in institutions all her life. My Mother last saw her Mother in 1932 when she was 14 years old and was told by her Grandmother not to visit her anymore. My Grandmother died in All Saints Hospital on the 12.12.1976.

Question's l wish l had answers to, why was my grandmother in institutions all her life, if it was because my grandmother had a baby out of wedlock, my Great Grandmother seems to have done the same, also why was my grandmother in a workhouse, also why was'nt she allowed to stay at her Mother's house, did my Great Grandmother ever go and visit her.
Violet Matilda Alexander died on the 21.03.1956, her address states that she lived at 27 Burney Lane, Birmingham 8, the informant was her Grandaughter M.J.Jennings.

The only time l have heard the name Francis was we used to have a Aunt Francis, l don't know if she was our real Aunt, and at one time my Mother told me that Aunt Francis had said to my Mother that she was more of a Francis then a Alexander!!!!!! what did she mean !!!! l don't suppose l will ever no the answers unless you can tell me different?

Hoope to hear from you soon
