Victorian service records

Can anyone advise me where to look for service records between 1851-1871? I have had no luck on FMP and Ancestry, also I have no regiment or number, only his date of birth and the fact that he was a gunner between those years.
Also did you have to be posh to get married in St Phillips, or could anyone? Then again I am not sure when it attained cathedral status.
