Victorian Prisoners Photo Albums at the National Archives

Louisa

master brummie
I have just been looking at the National Archives 'documents on line' website and came across the searchable Victoria prisoners album.

Three of the prisoners put their place of birth as Birmingham

Charles Faulkner age 27 date Dec 1872
George Payne age 27 date May 1873
Joseph Pritchard age 32 date May 1873

The cost of downloading the digitalised photograph is £3.50

Click on browse family history documents in left column and you come to the Victorian prisoners Album.

Louisa my my Greatgrand father was in winston Green prison 1889 I cannot find his prison records do you have access? are there any photos
thank you Wendy

Wendy
On the National Archives site there were only the three prisoners who said they were born in Birmingham mentioned in the index.

What years are you looking for and of course what names and what sort of crime.

I think that there is a police photo research service in Birmingham and I will find out more details about it for you.

Have you looked at the convict records in the city archives or newspapers of the time of your ancestors trial? Newspapers at that time gave a great deal of detail in their articles if it was an 'interesting' case but even if not the actual court hearing was mentioned in the paper.

Hello Louisa no I have not looked in the city archives I do not know any details of his crime only found him on 1891 census in prison winston Green. Do you think I would have any luck at the archives.
Thank you fro your time regards Wendy

Hi I was told that the early prison records for Winson Green were destroyed. You may be able to find something in court records or even local papers.

Hi Wendy
What is your ancestors name, if you dont mind me asking?

I know that at one time the Police Museum in Sparkhill Birmingham were featured on a BBC family history programe as having some Victorian prisoners photographs but I think it may have been transferred to the Warwickshire County office.

I have sent an e-mail to the museum to ask what records they have but have not heard anything yet.

The web address for them is www.westmidlandpolicemuseum.co.uk if you want to get in touch yourself.

At Warwick County Record Office there is a database of prisoners between 1801 to 1900 for warwickshire including Birmingham.

Iif you want to search this it is at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/corporate/prisoner.nsf

If this doesnt work try the www.warwickshire.gov.uk and look for search the database.

If you do find your ancestor in the index it should give you details of where the trial papers are located.

If you dont find him in the Warwickshire county office indexes try Birmingham. Send an e-mail and ask them where the records for the trial of prisoners in Winson Green jail in 1891 are located. It may take 2 or 3 weeks for a reply.

Hope you find him

These are the newspaper's I used to trace my G/grandfather's misdemeanour's, all relating to leaving his family chargable to the Aston Union Workhouse. They are the:

Birmingham & Aston Chronicle.........for me the year 1885
The Birmingham New's.................. " 1892
Aston Times............................... " 1888

Look for the pages with 'Aston Police Courts' on & search.
