CUSTOMS AND PRACTICES OF THE VICTORIAN POTTERY FACTORY.

This is Stoke on Trent but no doubt some of our ancestors belong to this Trade and era.

I am amazed once again at man and how he can take from the ignorant and poor when times for folk was a matter of life or death.

SYNOPSIS

Deductions and hidden costs even when the fault was not of their own making.

Some workers were paid in the form of a 'Wage Bill' This was given to the heads of deparments with a list of the workers and the monies owing.
Then the whole of the department would go to a favourite public house.
(They had To) The publican would change the Bill on certain conditions,
every-one had to have a cheese pie and a pint. the publican would hold back the change until each man had consumed 3/4 pints this included the children as well...Cat
