Use your loaf

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
HI GUYS;
Whilst out shopping today and buying bread ; an old saying came to my mind whish was an expression i had heard many times in my growing up and that was ;
stop messing about and get it together and use your loaf ; [ meaning your brain ]
to put theproblem right and stop fooling around on a situation where your brain is required
this is one old expression i have not heard in donkeys years ;as any body else
or they may have been called a dimnit dunce
but thats a expressional phrase word useing your loaf ;
best wishes astonion ;;

Using your loaf comes from cockney slang , i.e. use your loaf of bread ( head )

Thats one theory. Another comes from soldiers in I think Napoleonic war, put their hat on their bread ration, held it up on a stick, frenchie sniper fires at it and gives away his position.

I prefer the cockney rhyming theory myself tho.

I wonder where the expression Loafer comes from and it's meaning?. I know it is used to loaf or laze around but I am sure there is more to it. Jean.

HI JEAN ,
Hope you and pete are well ;
Jean the actual word you have said should have been loave and not loaf;
yes that word loave , was meant loaveing around was correct for lazeiness ;
using your loaf was your head ; and i am sure there and where thes expression orinate from i do not know
but that expression was se quie alot inthe old days as did hear these expressions quite alot in my boy hood days have a nice day jean ; best wishes alan ;;
