According to the 1911 census my g.g. uncle, W.B. URWIN lived in a house called 'Leyland', Sutton Coldfield, and was a sub inspector of schools, employed by the Board of Education.
In about 1915 his address was 22, Holly Lane, Erdington, Birmingham where presumably he lived until he died in 1923.
I would appreciate any information whatsoever about my g.g. uncle and also details of the addresses named. I don't know where he was buried or if there are any monumental inscription records of his burial anywhere.
In anticipation of your help, thanks!
Ken Urwin, Middlesbrough.

The attached gives the 1912 entry from the warwickshire Kellys for your relative. This may give a better idea of where the house was, though, I personally am not sure what they mean by the "Hill". My knowledge of sutton is not good. On the 1913 OS map it is obvious that there are some very large houses north of sutton on the lichfield road, but either this one isn't named on the map, or it is further north, off the map.

The address 22 holly lane is on the east side of the lane between sutton road and the junction with orphanage road. On the 1913 map this portion of the road is devoid of houses and this part is called Mason lane, so it is reasonable to conclude the house was purchased new after 1913. He is listed living there in the 1921 Kellys, and this would refer to 1920. he must have moved between 1914 and 1920.
It' difficult to tell from google or virtual earth whether the houses have been replaced, but as a guess I would think they are not original.

What's the next line on that Kelly's entry?
There is a district of Sutton, just past Mere Green, off the Lichfield Road called Hill Hook (see this map ) around Hill Hook Road. It's likely any large house there would be sold off for building land at about the time he moved. Leyland is a town in Lancashire where the Lancashire Steam Wagon Company had its works. Their petrol engined lorries and buses were marketed as 'Leyland', which then became world famous.

Is this him?

Not much use I'm afraid LLoyd. As sutton wasn't in birmingham, its the warwickshire directory, and that doesn.t have a street list. This entry is from the residents list and the next one is charles vale, avenue road

On the map you will find Lichfield road close to Hill Village road.

WILFRED BARWICK URWIN. First, I want to thank all those subscribers who very kindly welcomed me to this Birmingham Group and sending me the information I requested on the above ancestor of mine. I really apreciate the trouble you have all taken.
I now have a further request if possible. Wilfred Barwick URWIN died in 1923 and is buried in Sutton Coldfield Cemetery, in grave No. A501. I should be most grateful if someone in that area could possibly take a photo of the headstone and send it to me please.
In anticipation, many thanks,
Ken Urwin, Middlesbrough.

Hi,

I will try to get a photo of the headstone if I can find it, when I go to Good Hope Hospital on the 9th Feb, as the cemetry is next door.

Holly Lane has some large Victorian Houses on it still, and is near to the Chester Road at one end. This means that one side of the road is Sutton and the other is Erdington.
Also, there is a Maney Hill in Sutton; I'll put my thinking cap on and see if I can think of anything else in the meantime.

Hello Amanda,
I am absolutely delighted to receive your mail which offered to take a photo for me of the headstone in SCF cemetery, many thanks. But PLEASE don't go to too much trouble trying to find it as I know what jungles cemeteries can be. I was given the grave number from an email sent to me by Sutton Hall Cemetery Office, Lindridge Road, who also told me that they think the grave is situated in Section 7, on the corner between the Avenue and Section 8. I don't know if that extra info will be of any help to you.
Thank you once again.
Kind regards,
Ken Urwin, Middlesbrough.
