:) please bear with me because I have just joined the forum, first posting!

Ancestors from the above family, christened at St Philips Cathedral. Samuel Underwood, Sarah Underwood, David Underwood ( my great, great grandfather, later moved to Rugby, Warks),
Roger Underwood, Richard Underwood, christenings took place 1770-1782. Parents Enoch
Underwood and wife Ann (surname unknown). Have found Samuel Underwood on censuses
1841 & 1851, living in St Pauls - Cox Street, living with James Underwood born 1821 (relationship unknown) in 1841. Living with grandaughter Emma Underwood b. 1831 on 1851 census. Unable to find any other details for the family on family research commercial websites, can anyone please help? Am I posting in the right/wrong place?
 
There are a lot of Underwoods mentioned in directories in birminghamin the period, but none fit the names you have given (other possibly than ann). In case they are of interest I list them (1815-1855) below

Hi and welcome to the forum:)

There is a marriage in 1762 for Enoch Underwood and Anne Docker at St Martin's on IGI (Family Search) and various children christened at St Martins and St Phillips, some of which you have mentioned. Just wondering if they are the same family?

Also an Emma Underwood born 29 Dec 1830 Christened 24 Jan 1831 St Martins, parents David Underwood and Mary Ann. Marriage for David Underwood and Mary Ann Greaves 11 Nov 1827 St Martins. There are more children born to these if you look on IGI.

the marriage that suzanne found at st. martins has the following info on the original record

banns of marriage between enoch underwood and anne docker were lawfully published on the 24th and 31st day of october and on the 7th day of november 1762 without contradiction

enoch underwood of this parish bachelor jeweller and anne docker of this parish spinster were married in this church 9th november 1762

enoch and ann both signed their names (ann spelt without the e) witnesses were eliza langford and benjamin underwood
 
Thanks Mikejee, and for replying so quickly. I will keep a copy of the above names. Samuel Underwood b. 1770 was a silver polisher, granddaughter
Emma Underwood a silver burnisher, so I presume they were employees of somebody(s). James Underwood occupation on 1841 census a lapaday??
I think they may mean lapidary (gemstone cutting) but relationship to Samuel not given, possibly grandson or great nephew perhaps. Have not found any listing in trade directories.

Thanks very much for your info. I did find a record of marriage for Enoch Underwood & Anne Docker on the IGI (Family Search) but wasn't sure if it was my family. You mention David Underwood & Mary Ann Greaves. I have 2 census records for a David Underwood and wife Mary 1841 & 1851 living in Great Charles Street, jewellery quarter, children William, Mary Ann, Ann & Emma born 1830 BUT they are not the correct family because my Emma also born 1830/1 was living in Cox Street in 1851 with Samuel and occupation is also different. I don't have any records for children born to Enoch and Ann at St Martins, only St Philips. I feel a bit confused!!

Thanks for your info. too. I'm really interested in this record you have for Enoch Underwood and Anne Docker, on the IGI Ann is spelt without the e
on the childrens' christening records at St Philips. If I could prove this correct Enoch would be my great, great, great, grandfather. I now want to know who Benjamin Underwood was, and his relationship to our family and Eliza Langford. I have also found a burial record for an Enoch Underwood at St Philips in 1797 which might fit! I will continue to search. 3 weeks ago I visited Birmingham and the jewellery quarter for the first time, for the day, but didn't have the chance to spend time in the central library, do they have any parish records on line?

benjamin underwood married christian ainge at st. martins in 1768. he is listed as being a pattin-ring forger or pallin-ring forger
 
Thanks again Shera, found the same record on the IGI last night, marriage date 28 Jan 1768. Good to have the occupation. I am continuing my own search, any info. you can find is very much appreciated. Benjamin might be Enoch's brother. Have included you as a 'friend' but may not have done this correctly!

both christened at NEW MEETING HOUSE, MOOR STREET-UNITARIAN , BIRMINGHAM

FORGOT TO MENTION THE PARENTS WERE MICHAEL AND ELIZ UNDERWOOD

Hi Shera, yes I've seen this before. Not sure whether these records are relevant to my family though the dates fit. Unitarian? All the other family records are C of E but I suppose if Enoch married Ann Docker and she was C of E - well, it's all protestant I suppose. I think non conformists were much frowned upon in these times?

the underwoods was known for there off licence,s
in and around the birmingham area of aston ; and of newtown aston
in and around the forties and fiftys the last one i recall was new town aston
around the early seventies in the new town shopping centre
the old under woods was lichfield rd aston birmingham 6
where they dne a roaring trade in the forties and fifties ;

Just to let you know in case you don't know, the University of the West of England (UWE) has funding for the next 3 years to update names/heraldic charges which may help genealogists to find ancestors from place names etc., though this may not happen for all parts of the UK.
 
I have been tracing my family history for the SMALLBROOK family. One of my ancestors is a ANN UNDERWOOD, born about 1760/1 who married a William Smallbrook on 3rd September 1787. She died or at least was buried on 27th October 1825 at St Philip Birmingham. Have not traced back any further. I wonder if we are distantly related? I always thought I was a southerner and now find that loads of my ancestors came from the Birmingham area on both my fathers and mothers side of the family.:D

If anyone has any information on any of the Smallbrook families related to the above William whose ancestors were all Charles Smallbrooks who ended up in the Plymouth area would love to hear from you.
