Tram operation in the WW1

My grandmother was a clippy on the Birmingham trams in the First World War.
I have been told that she was the last female tram clippy to be released at the end of the war. Does any one know any thing about this or perhaps tell me how to go about finding some information apparently there was some kind of ceremony. She was a widow and her name was Laura Bates.

Can't help you with any information about the finish of World War I women conductors but here is a photo of one with her tram at the Kings Head terminus on the Hagley Road during that war.

Sadly little in the way of personnel files survive from that long ago, but the women workers were usually considered temporary until the men who had gone to war returned. The same happened in WW2, but in the staff shortages which developed in the late 50s and 60s women were able to show they worth again - but permanently this time.
