Mike, the road Lyn is looking for is in Nechells, on the 1871 census one address given is Manor House, Trafalgar Road, and the other is 2 Manor Grove, Trafalgar Road. On census page before is 207 Nechells Park Road and on the page after is St. Clement Road. not sure if thats any help.
Lynne.

Can't seem to find a manor grove in the directories or, later, in the electoral rolls, so will have to go fromthe census and work out where it was from that and directories. What was his/her name?
Sorry missed last post. will look in nechells

hi mike lynne has been looking up for me and on the 1871 census found william harrington..wife sarah..kids lilian and clara at

2 manor grove..trafalgar road..its getting a bit confusing now...

lynne i think the 1871 census address you have for the chapmans at manor house trafalger road should really be chattaway st because thats where manor house was...oh dear what a mess lol.

mike if you cant work this one out please dont worry about it..im confused anyway...

Lyn and Mike, Thats what is on the census, the Manor House is shared with a Taylor family and they are both still there on the 1881 so I wondered if the Street name had been changed. Its definitely in the St. Clement area.
Lynne.

There was a Trafalgar Place in Cook St near the top of the road at Holburn Hill end according to Kelly's.

how strange phil because the family were also in cook st...

thanks phil we need all the help we can get on this one..

mike i dont know if this will help but ive just bought the trafalger road thread started by chocks to the top..under neighbours and street section..you are better at understanding these things but it looks like there was a street name change at some point..

Thanks for that. I had forgotten about that other thread, even though I contributed to it.
Have looked thoroughly into this now (as far as I can). I am sure that the map shown on the other thread was partly in the mapper’s imagination. There was a Trafalgar Road. The first mention I can find is on a rather poor Kellys map from the 1879 directory. However this was shown running only between Holborn Hill & Chattaway St. No properties are listed in it, and the first time I can find this is 1873, and then 1883, by which time it has changed its name to Cook St. Presumably before there were no businesses and the houses considered to be in the street were not thought worth including. It never went through to Cuckoo road as indicated in the map on the other thread.
So, you will notice I said “houses considered in the street”. I have found Manor Grove in the directories and it must be one of three buildings on the c 1889 OS map, which I have marked in red. It is considered at that time by the directories as being in Chattaway St, next to the manor house , and to the west of it (though as will be seen had had other addresses). The Manor House and Manor Grove seem to be under associated ownership, as can be seen from the following (remembering that at this time the nominal year of the directory could possibly be up to 2 years out:

1862 Chattaway St not listed but Thomas Chapman is as omnibus prop. At Manor house, Long Acre
1867 & 68 Chattaway St not listed but Thomas Chapman is as omnibus prop atManor house, Nechells Park road
1873 Thomas Chapman , Manor house. Trafalgar rd. Nechells
1876 -78 Alfred Augustus Bill , Manor house Chattaway St
Thomas Chapman, Manor Grove
1879 Thomas Chapman , omnibus prop , Manor Grove , Chattaway St
Harry Sproston & Alfred Auguatus Bill, Manor House, Chattaway St
1880 Harry Chapman, cab prop., Manor Grove, Chattaway St
Thomas Chapman , omnibus prop, and Harry Sproston, Manor House, Chattaway St
1882 William Henry Lewis, commercial traveller, Manor grove, Chattaway St
Thomas Chapman & Taylor Thomas Price, Manor House, Chattaway St

I won’t go any further unless it is of interest .
