Hi Lyn, I would have said, that the library was to the right of the Town Hall, behind Chamberlains memorial. could be wrong though.

morning froth and terry...reason i thought it was the old library is because of its shape..posting a pic...i have always had a problem actually knowing where it exactly stood thats why i was hoping that someone who used the library could tell me...i hate not having me bearings lol..

Lyn, The old library and the Institute are to the left of the Town Hall. The second picture shows the Institute on the corner of Paradise Street and Ratcliff Place taken from the corner of the Town Hall.

1921 eh ? I'd love to see the aircraft that the picture was taken from.
I'm trying to get this straight. What would've been demolished to make way for the Hall of Memory ?

The Hall of Memory was built during 1922-25 so, just after this photo was taken, it was built on the filled in canal basin, Gibson's Arm on Broad Street, which would be just off the left hand edge of the photo about 1/4 down.

I spent many happy hours in the old library, and I recall that there was a petition to prevent its demolition - obviously not successful. I can also remember sheltering in the porticoed entrance during a terrific downpour along with it seemed about 200 other people. I'm guessing that it was demolished in the late 1960's/early 1970's? Can anyone confirm?

Thanks for the pic Lyn and the rest of the info everyone else, like Lyn, I can never place where the old buildings were so will have to have a better look next time I am in town.

Hi Lyn and Sue. I've had a good look at Lyn's photo #1 and Moss's photo #13 and my guess is the house at an angle in Moss's photo is here in the aerial view. You can make out the billboards next to the house going in the direction of Broad Street. Viv.

The picture you are talking about has been mentioned on a forum before with respect to the building possibly being a pub, though I am not aure whether it was this forum. In fact it seems never to have been a pub, and for much of its life was Southall Bros & Barclay. laboratory equipment manufacturers.

Can see why it could be mistaken for pub. It basically looks like a pub. But the aerial shot seems to show its joined to a much more industrial building at the back. These aerial views can be very revealing. Viv.

A photo of the same site after it was cleared in preparation for the building of the Hall of Memory.
