My Uncle Tom used to drink in the club at the top of Grove Lane, Handsworth.
Was it the Horticultural Club? I dont know..
Anyway, Uncle Tom was a real character, he married my Aunt Eva in the early 60's,
They were never blessed with children of their own, but no matter, they had seven of us who loved them both very much.
Tommy was originally from Dublin and came, like a lot of Irish
People to seek work in Birmingham.
He worked at Drews Lane for Leyland, doing a delivery job.
Uncle Tom was on the Committee at the club, but he was never your typical Committee man, for a start, a smile sat permanantly on his face, and he also had that particular twinkle in his eyes that a lot of the Irish seem to have.
By all accounts, Uncle Tom was a great dancer, I know for a fact, he could also hold a tune.
He never had much money did my Uncle Tom, always seeming to live from day to day and week to week.
I do know this though, he had grace in abundance and laughter in his heart.
He had a brother, did Uncle Tom, his brother still lived out in Dublin where he ran a small pig farm.
His brother, without Tom's knowledge developed cancer, and rather than worry him kept it secret...
Tommy had a secret too...at the same time his brother had a Cancer growing inside him...so did he...
Tom's brother died 7 years ago, unmarried, alone, but never unloved...Uncle Tom joined him 4 months later,
He was 67.
He was a brave man who had a terrible ending, and he fought that inevitable ending like the man he was...
A man with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye..
We use the word hero an awful lot these days, Uncle Tom was and is, one of mine.I did something for him on the day of his funeral...
You see, all my life I've been able to make people laugh..
Its something I know he would have wanted so I did it..
On a cold icy day in January I made my Aunt Eva laugh til tears of happiness rolled down her cheeks..
All that day, just for him, I played the Clown..
The problem was, do you know who the saddest person is in the Circus?....
God bless ya buddy, I love and miss you.
