Thorntons have been around since 1911, although I don't know when they arrived in Birmingham. (I was wrongly under the impression that they were a much more recent retailer).
InItially, there was one shop in Cherry Street and one in Bull Street. Naturally supply was hampered during WW2, but later Thorntons were able to expand from "niche shops in secondary locations" to more prime locations. There was even a shop at Fort Dunlop.
They also produced chocolate for M&S and Boots. I think Thorntons shops closed in 2021, although the brand is still available in supermarkets.
