Thomas smith, Saltley Mill

Thomas Smith made all kinds of Spanners from their works in Saltley
The company was founded in 1848 and operated for many years from their works in Adderley Road, Saltley, but moved to Coleshill about 1958.
It was a drop-forging company and apart from "Snail Brand" spanners made forgings for the motor industry, like crankshafts for Leyland Motors and con-rods, etc.

The company was originally known as Thomas Smith & Sons (Saltley) Ltd., but changed its name to Thomas Smith & Sons of Saltley Ltd., when it moved to its new factory in Station Road, Coleshill.
The first picture shows The Duke of Edinburgh signing the company's visitors book when he visited the Coleshill Works on 18th July 1973, and the second picture shows a 3 ton drop forging hammer at work in the factory.
