Thomas Jefcoate

In one of the early 1860 directories I found Thomas Jefcoate, carter, working and living in Smith Street, Hockley. By 1881 he was living at No 2 Key Hill, which was almost opposite the cemetery gates. If there are any Kellys available for 1870 - 1880, I would quite like to know which year he moved house if at all possible.

It is a bit more complicated than you thought. Some of the following entries are listed as Jeffcoate, but are certainly the same person.
Thomas Jefcoate is listed in the 1862 directory at 58 Smith St. No others are listed at that address. In 1855- 1858 he is listed as a coal dealer at either 58 or 58½ Smith St. Neither he nor no 58 is listed in 1867 or 68, so he could have been there , but no evidence. In 1872 John Thomas, coal dealer is at 58.
In 1873 he is a carter & goods remover at 66 Smith St. there appears to be no major renumbering, and this is certainly a different address in Smith St.
Neither he nor no 66 is listed in 1876, 78, 79 or 80, but in 1883 he is at 2 Key hill
Mike.

Oh thanks Mike. He certainly liked to move about a bit in Smith Street! In 1881 he was at Key Hill, I do know that and he died that year, but his son took over and was working as a furniture remover.

Many thanks - at least I know he never moved far.
