Thomas Ganley 1877-1940

Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone could help or give me advice.

I am researching into the life of my Great Grandfather Thomas Ganley. He was born on 9th May 1877 at 4 Court, Baggot Street and lived in and around Birmingham until around 1913 or so before moving to London and eventually settling in Surrey until his death in 1940. I'm on Ancestry and his profile is on my family tree.

I know he boxed both legally and illegally around the early 1900's and fought under the name TOM GANLEY. I wondered if there were any photos of him posing as a fighter or if anyone through historical records had any info or photos.

His boxing on record is on Google but so far I've been unable to find any historical pictures.

Thanks everyone

Mark,

Welcome to the Forum. I've just checked the British Library Newspaper Archives and there are getting on for 30 articles mentioning Tom Ganley, the boxer, unfortunately there were no photographs in those early newspapers. It's a subscription only site, but you can get short subscriptions.

Can't see anything on Google either. Most likely sources are postcard fairs, eBay, Delcampe, but all this really depends on whether anyone bothered to take a photograph of him. I'm not sure if there were any boxing magazines around at that time - the current ones like Boxing Monthly only seem to go back about 30 years. If there were, then postcard fairs, which generally have a paper ephemera section, or again possibly Delcampe. I've found invoices and quotations from old Birmingham companies on Delcampe.

Again, nothing online, but an email to the British Library - they have a form to fill in here - might reveal if they have any holdings of boxing magazines in the period you are talking about:-

I hope that helps,

Unfortunately Tom Ganley doesn't appear in their Find-a-Boxer lists, Mike. Interesting magazine & site though, but it must be getting difficult to find photographs and histories to publish the next issue.
