Theodore St. Mission

Help please. I have found a book that was given as a prize to my grandmother Selina Heath (known as Cissy). I imagine that it was a book given as a Sunday School award. She married in 1923 so it would have been given to her before then. Can anyone throw any light please onto where Theodore Street was etc. Thanks in advance.

The only Theodore St I can find.Church and school in Summer Lane.

sorry Mike didnot see your post

Thank you so much Mike. It was obviously local to where she lived in Burbury Street. Do you know if it is still in existence?

Jules,

Theodore St. ran between New Town Row and Summer Lane. The next road up from New John Street West, and close to Frankfort St.

Sorry, missed the previous posts.

It's not on the current map of Brum.

Very tiny bit about the churches in the area and Theodore Street Mission from British History Online:

7. ST. EDWARD, Birmingham (New John St. West), a brick building with apsidal chancel, nave, vestries and porch, was built about 1853 as a Presbyterian church. (fn. 92) In 1896 it was bought and presented to the Church of England and was licensed as a mission of St. Stephen's, Birmingham. It was consecrated as an Anglican church in 1898. (fn. 93) A parish was assigned out of St. Stephen's, Birmingham, and St. Matthias's, Birmingham, in 1899; (fn. 94) the living was a vicarage in the gift of the bishop. (fn. 95) The benefice was united with that of St. Nicolas, Birmingham, in 1942 and in 1949 the parish was merged with that of St. George, Birmingham. (fn. 96) St. Edward's church was subsequently closed but was reopened as St. George's church in 1959. A mission hall in Theodore Street was licensed for public worship, 1914-26. (

the street is no longer there, and no buildings seem to survive, but it was approximately (very) on the site of what is Attenborough close, but running at a slightly different angle

I believe my Great Grandfather Alfred Wilson started this Mission.
I have attached a picture of an "Aniverary" at the Mission in about 1913, my Grandfather Harold Hugh Wilson is Fith from the left on the 2nd row up.
Your Grandmother may well be on the picture.

Dave, what an absolutely marvellous photograph. I am certain that my grandmother Selina (Cissy) Heath and her sister Lily Heath are in the picture. Sitting directly below your grandfather! Isn't it amazing. I have attached photographs of both Selina and Lily for you to compare but I am sure I am correct. What a find - thank you so much for posting it. It seems that our ancestors knew each other. There were also two brothers who were in this family Frederick Heath and Alfred. I haven't any pictures of them when they were small but they may also be on your photo!

Hi again. I have been studying Dave's photograph for ages. It holds a fascination for me! I am wondering whether the lady (front row, 5th person from the left) is my great grandmother Mary Ann Heath (nee Trotman). I have the photograph below of her but am unable to decide if it is her or not.

Jules, Thanks for the picture of the two couples, your Grandmother and Who? and my Grandfather Harold Wilson and my Grandmother Florence nee Troop, Do you know when it was taken or where?
I have attached a picture of my Grandparents wedding.
I am hoping to speak with my mothers cousin Mavis (94) who apparently has many memories of the Theodore Street Mission.

Hi Dave

Are you saying that the picture I posted showing the two couples, one of the couples is your grandfather and grandmother, Harold and Florence? Wow this is amazing. The other couple on the photograph is of my great aunt, my grandmother's sister Lily Heath with her fiance Dan. Dan died sometime after WW1 and my aunt never married. I have lots of postcards that my aunt collected from when she was a young girl. I am sure that some of them were from Florence or Florrie? maybe they were from your grandmother? Going back to the photograph. I have no idea where it was taken - sorry.

Hi Davelee79 - I have been thinking about the picture showing my gt Aunt Lily Heath, her fiance Dan (will have to do a search and find his surname) your Grandfather Harold Wilson and Grandmother, Florence Troop. I find it absolutely amazing that the picture I decided to post of Lily (when I have a few of them) showed your grandparents! I bet when they had it taken nearly 100 years ago now, they never imagined that we would be in contact. I know from Lily's postcards that she was corresponding with Dan from about 1913 onwards. I can only see the left hand of Florence in the picture and she isnt wearing an engagement ring. Dan, I am sure, lived the Isle of Man. I do have some postcards though sent from him postmarked Liverpool. I also know that for a time he was living in Carpenters Road, Lozells which is the next road to where my Aunt Lily lived in Burbury Street. Maybe that's how she met him. I don't know when he died but I know she never got over him and subsequently never married. There are about 350 postcards in her collection and they are stored safely in a large album in my loft. I will search for them and start having a good look through. Because of her collection Lily's friends were always sending her postcards and I am hopeful that I will find some from your grandmother.

I wonder if your cousin Mavis will have any memories of Lily Heath or indeed my grandmother Cissy Heath. I would love to hear them. I don't know when Cissy left Theodore Mission but she was attending a Sunday School at Aston Villa Wesleyan Church when she met my grandfather Charles Birbeck whom she married there in 1923.

Do you have any more photographs of your Grandfather's wedding? I was thinking along the lines of a group photograph. You are lucky having even just the one photograph of their wedding. My grandmother lived next door to me, with my grandfather and her sister Lily for all of my childhood. I spent a lot of time with them all. Yet I have never seen a wedding photograph of my grandparents. Jules

Jules
I have a photo of the wedding, only family on it I think. Mavis is the small child on her Mothers lap, on the left of the picture.

Thanks for the wedding photo Davelee79. I have been looking through my Aunt Lily's postcard album. There were a couple of postcards with a reference to the Mission Hall, but nothing much. I did find the attached card from a Mrs A. Troop. Perhaps your Grandmother's mother?

I also came across this picture and am posting in just in case it means anything to you. (a bit of a long shot!)

Does anyone know if the Salvation Army took over in 1926, or at a another date?

Unfortunately I haven't been on the forum for quite a while :-( Unfortunately my laptop was stolen during a house burgulary last year and photo's I had stored on there have been lost. I have tried to access the picture that davelee79 posted on this thread of Theodore St. Mission but it just says attached thumbnails. Does this mean the photos have been archived?........or are they lost :-( Jules65

Thanks mikejee for this photograph, it isn't the one I was referring to but it is nice to see it as I don't think I've seen this one before :-) It was the Anniversary picture mentioned in this post by davelee79

I am particularly interested in it as it showed members of my family. Nevermind, I hope maybe davelee79 will see this post and put his picture on again :-)
