Roundabout Theatre Company will be performing So,Not a Lovely War! in The Custard Factory on Saturday 8th November . The show is set in Yard 1 in Alcock Street, and is based on the diaries of Harry Smith who lived there until in his teens. We would like to use the names of those who lived in the street for our characters so we can commemorate the people who lived in Deritend during both wars. Looking at family diaries, I believe Harry and his brother knew quite a few of the people who are mentioned in Forum discussions.
Would you mind us using the Alcock St discussions to ask for volunteers? We would like family names, where they lived in Alcock Street and, if they died whilst fighting in either war,the battle they were in. If we can't use them all in the show, we will include them in the show programme - there won't be any costs for volunteers.
I am a member of the forum, originally from Birmingham (Northfield) and Harry was my father . The show is to commemorate his life, his brother Joe who was killed in Hamburg in1943 whose death Harry mourned for the rest of his life, and also his brother Thomas Henry (Harry) who was killed in Palestine in 1918 aged 19 and who Harry was named after.
We usually tour around the Bedford / Buckingham area but this is a very special show for us and the reason for us performing in the Custard Factory in advance of Remembrance Sunday and just round the corner from Alcock Street
