The Wormhoudt Massacre May 28 1940
This is the story about The 2nd battalion Royal Warwicks, 4th battalion Cheshire Regiment and soldiers of The Royal Artillery as well as French soldiers in charge of a military depot who were taken to a barn in La Plaine au Bois near Wormhoudt and murdered.
The German soldiers what were responsible for this atrocity, belonged to the Waffen SS attached to the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler during the Battle of France in May 1940, their commander was Wilhelm Mohnke.
The 2nd Battalion Royal Warwicks who had made a last ditch stand, inflicting many casualties on the attacking German forces also stopping the advance and putting it behind schedule. They then surrendered after running out/low on ammunition. The Germans then marched The Warwicks, 4th battalion Cheshire Regiment and soldiers of The Royal Artillery as well as French soldiers to a barn.
In the barn, the german soldiers systematically murdered the captured soldiers by machine gun fire and their stick grenades, a few survivors lived through this ordeal and escaped, to tell the tale of this infamous episode from WW2.
Below I have attached the story from various sites.
