I'm researching my family history and I have an Edwin J Lewis who was the landlord of The Trafalgar Inn at 203 Barr Street. Does anyone know or have any connections about this? I can't find it listed on any of the old pubs in the area and would like to know if it's still there or any other memories about it or that side of my family? I know Edwins grandaughter Phyllis emigrated to Australia with her family and i'm doing well with that part of it but would just love to know more about their time in Birmingham and the pub.

Thanks

Is this Barr St Hockley i used to work there in the 60s can,t remember a Trafalgar Inn . Dek

Hi

I don't know where abouts exactly it is - the census says parish of All Saints? Think it's central birmingham...

In Kellys, The Trafalgar Inn is listed as such up to 1921, but by 1932 no 203 is just listed as a beer retailer under the licensee (which could mean it was still a pub in 1932, but more likely, in this case, was just an off licence). It is not listed in 1933 and is a fish and chip shop in 1936.
Between 1884 and 1888 the street name and numbering changed, and in 1884 it was 37 Barr St West. It is first listed by name in around 1876, but there had been a “victualler” (ie a pub) there since about 1868. there is no mention of 37 previous to this and the 1861 census has a big hole between 25 and 39, so it possibly had not been built then.
If you tell me what year your ancestor was there , I will see if I can see about how long he was there.

He's listed on the 1891 census as the landlord of The Trafalgar Inn and as a Horse Dealer and he died in 1894. I checked the 1911 census and someone else a publican there so still must have been a pub there then.

Thanks so much for the info and anything else you can find out would be great. So 37 Bar street west is now...back to being Bar Street?

Afraid you won’t find it all on the web, as it comes from my collection of directories. I would have added that there is https://www.historicaldirectories.org, but it is a bit sparse for Birmingham. However have just tried to access it to check address and got “webpage is not available”. Paid access to some directories is at https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/index.html
In 1890 The Trafalgar is listed as John Henry Cheslin and in 1892 as William Snead Gregory, so Edwin wasn’t there very long.
However
1892-1895 Lewis Edwin John, beer retailer, 102 Hockley hill
He is not listed in 1896 , though there is :
Lewis Edwin, cab & car proprietor, 211 New John st. west
There is no mention of an Edwin Lewis in the 1888 or 1890 directories

102 hockley hill is shown in very small letters on the 1891 census as the Tramway Inn

Sorry. Forgot he died 1894, so forget cab proprietor
Yes Barr St west became part of Barr st

Attached, from David Harvey's book "Hockley" is a picture of a tram outside the Cable tramway Inn in july 1890, which must be the same as the Tramway Inn.
