The Tilt Hammer

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
Does any body recall the tilt hammer at saltley gate
and can any body tell me is it still there it was a rough house
always a fight and the windows always getting smashed
especily during the seventies i know eventualy it did fianal go down the pipe they introduced topless barmaids on a sunday morning to draw customers in whe a pub starts that game its the end of the line for a pub either thator introduce the pound a pint
left over lager by that i mean the barrel is out of date
rather send it back with the dray menthey would sell it off to recoup some of is barrelege just to please there area managers
then weathspoon came along and picked up a soloution they would have all out of date beers send it up north and docerite with another chemicial which would expand its life for another ten days andthey would se nd it out to certain clubs=
that is a fact its not my presumption i had this from a director from weather spoons from when they first set up in brum but getting back tothe ols tilt it was a wicked place to drink and the gents toilets used to be out side wicked in the winter days and even worse if it snowed the ladies would have been alright inside best wishes astonian ,;;

Hi

I lived on Alum Rock and remember the Tilt well. It was a rough place! It is no longer there.
Wendy

I know the Tilt from the days when Joe Brolan kept it shalalee and all that:D:D:D Mau-reece

The Tilt Hammer like a lot of pubs these days closed down through lack of use, was boarded up for some time and then like a lot of other pubs recently ended its days in a ball of flames.

It dosen't even look like the above picture now but was demolished a couple of years ago and is just a vacant lot.

I and some friends used to drink in the Tilt and then sometimes we would walk down to the White House? then the London Tavern, and on to the Sportsman. Happy days. Would any one have any pics of the White House and London Tavern? It would be nice to see them again.

hi mike

along with the golden gloves on the old moseley rd ,

Astonian, I saw the club but never went in. Went in the Tilt sometimes of a Saturday lunchtime but in the Rock of an evening.
Mike

Found these from the 1940's, I thought it was Atkinsons and it was

didnt the rock look lovely then. nice photos harley.ps i remember the jigsaw .

hi mike
many thanks for those pics yes i can recall the alum rock in those day
and the pubwas a cracking decent pub during and up till about the late fifties
but then a slow rot crept in and bt the mid sixties that was the turning point
and down hill very rapid and it was lost for good in the fifties an old friend and neibour from cromwell square the craddockd movedupthere and we went to there house
and it was a lovely house with large back garden the road was tree lined it was fantascic it was like being inthe countrycompared from the lichfield rd when we was living inthe back to backs on the lichfield rd amongest the red plaster bugs by the hundreds and the cock roaches and the screaming pigs from behind the living room wall from thompsons slaughtering the pigs the rock was beautiful but compared with
todays standard the trees have gone full of litter and run down unkempt houses and shops the rock as lost all its beauty ash rd was the same it may have been a main rd but it was a serene rd and the grave yard was kept in good condition even those masonettes was kept in good clean conditions the sharp family moved from lichfield rd in the fifties from the slums of cromwell terrace
have a nice day mike best wishes astonian ;;;

I remember the tilt hammer as a child in the mid sixties, my uncle Pete McEvoy used to drink in there, he used to take my nan Ruby in there and sometimes we would go with them, we loved it he would pass a beer jug round ( getting a few coppers for the kids)he used to say, we used to buy loads of sweets, he used to be something of a character and i think known as a bit of a trouble maker locally - he used to drink in the Jigsaw -the Havelock, and another pub i cant remember the name of - but i know he died outside the pub in the early hours of christmas day in the 80,s - Im in my mid sixties now but i have fond memories of this tall handsome Dublin man -he was very good to us as kids, we had a rough life and he would always do his best to give us a day out and treat us.

Lovely story Wacky, thanks for sharing it! I do remember the Tilt Hammer in laters years when I worked in the area.
Lynn.
