That's a lovely photo Cromwell the name of the pub made me laugh, I was born in the matrenity home in Heathfield Road.

Had a few pints in there in the long gone past, and also the Crompton Arms which was down the road opposite (Crompton Rd.?)

Oh happy days....:D

Thanks for the picture Crommie, it certainly jogged my memory:rolleyes:

Since I lived on Westminster Rd near Hutton - I do remember the The Stork and Crompton - But in those days I was too young to go in LOL

Although in the summer mom and dad did take me to the grounds in the Endwood -It was very pleasant surrounded by hanging baskets of flowers to be treated to a grapefruit drink and a bag of crisps -I thought it just great

Interesting photo of Heathfield Rd Graham, after we got married, we lived in the house that is on the extreme left of the picture, I think it was 173. That was in 1970.

My parents (especially my mom!) used both The Stork and The Crompton. We lived in Putney Road - and I was born in Heathfield Road Maternity Hospital too. All the best people were Moma P !!!

Lovely picture of the Stork, Crom. Nice lamps, although one was missing, nicer lamp post (standard Handsworth UDC main road issue) and fabulous chimneys on the buildings. I sometimes think chimneys were the most important part of a building. People don't know what a chimney is today, any more than theu know how to light a fire.
Peter

Such pity those lovely old lamps have all disappeared now. I agree about the chimneys Peter, when ever I am drawwing I love to do the chimneys, the scale of them in relation to the rest of the building always surprises me.:)

Hi Lynn
only last week i drove up heathfield road passing the old stork pub and much to my surprize it was still standing
after all these years, and i thought to myyself how amazing its still standing
i used to pop in there many years ago in the fifties and sixtys when i used to deliver the milk
for midland counties dairy,s all around those streets of handsworth from one end to another
Even after hours of work on our pub crawl and end up in the continenal club down the stairs
and knock the knocker on the spy hole where one would look through and see whom you are whethe you get in or not
be there until six in the morning if you aint working if you wanted to be
the stork was always choco block day and night just like the villa cross and noisy
even thou i have not been there in years since the eightys and knowing about the gangs that freqented there
mainly farm street , and i would say the police have made it an order, what we call in the trade
A chequerd flag pub known
but i will say in my opinium it would not surprize me it will be sold and change trade
in the same token of breath it will be sad to see such a well historic pub like the stork disapear
for good it used to be a good family pub with never bother a well respected and well ran premises
please keep us all informed if you get wind of the out come
i do have a large picture of the early stork with its date
best wishes , and keep up your hard work you are doing for us all, Alan,, Astonian,,,,,

A day nursery!
I used to travel on the 46 bus through Lozells from town when I was studying at night school in Brooklyn Technical College (a long time ago). It turned right down Finch Road and passed a small but pretty pub called 'The Village Maid' which was not far from The Stork. This is another one of those pubs whose photograph I have been searching for for years, maybe one day I'll get lucky!

I'm sure there is a photo on the forum of The Village Maid. If I remember it has a mini parked outside.

lastest update...taken today folks and not much left now to say this was a pub except for the name and the forlorn lamp on the finch road side:(...looks like it wont be long before it opens as a nursery...thats another one gone

Hi BB,

Sadly the old Village Maid has now gone & been turned into housing complex, such a shame. Do you recall the bakery at the end of the same road if I've got my roads right I think it was called Baines?

My Dad used to maintain an old Maroon MK 2 Jaguar, which belonged to a certain Mr Derek Dougan who resided at the Stork Hotel during the 60's when he played for AVFC.

Lozellian.
