The Scarlet Pimpernel, Harbourne

el-stano

Ex-lurker
Hello All,
We were watching Doctors this afternoon and the plot centred on a pub which looked real. I googled it and came up with the Scarlet Pimpernel in Harbourne. In flashback, it appeared to be open, but it was night and the pub was only in the background. In the present time it was boarded up and then someone torched it.
After a lot of searching I found the web address but it is defunct.
I don't remember the place, although I did drink in the Old House at Home in 1966, even though I didn't live in that area.
So, can anyone tell me if the Scarlet Pimpernel has close in the last few months and indeed (if the fire was real) it is to be demolished? And does anyone know any of its history?
Many thanks,
Stan

Hi Stan

The Scarlett Pimpernel on the junction of Tennal Road and Fellows Lane, all I can tell you is it opened on December 11th 1963. Thats all I know about it, not a pub I ever used.

I pass the Scarlet Pimpernel occasionally but have not done so in last few weeks. Have been in there twice during last year. I think there is a new landlord who moved from one of the pubs on Harborne High St

Last time i was in there, and thats about 25 years ago or more, the landlord collected match boxes and had them displayed around the bar.

up as BUSINESS TO LET ...15/2/11,...........a man called jeff who run berrow court in harborne

((((((a big posh house where they do weddings and have a resturant also they filmed seris 2 of boon there which is avalible on ebay have watched the re runs many seens filmed in birmingham)))))))
was running it up until 2 or 3 years ago but i dont know about who run it lately.......also the outdoor across the road is owned by a man called fred who also owns blandford wines the outdoor down welshhouse farm rd my mom said his son used to run it a few years back

So it looks as if is closed. I drove past last week but is was about 9.00pm and appeared to be in darkness.
Yes, I imagine it must be. You can't see the owners letting it be used for a "Doctors" plot involving it being boarded up and set on fire if it was still trading, can you?

hi yes i do beleive it foul short again like the rest of them around the area in quinton
it will probaly reopened as a private members club like the monica did up the road by quinton rd west thats wjhat they do now when they closed there licence
there as been alot of violence in that pub over the last three years i have a nephew whom was born and bred from up the rd he his well known in the area and he as told me
and my sister inlaw lives across the rd from the monica
on the mention of berrow court hotel a friend of find whom is in the high rank of the NHS years ago was going to buy the berrow court hotel during the period boon was filming
and he was going to turn it into a nursing home for the elderly on the private he was one of the first in line to buy many years ago i had the pleasureof going in there to do some work for them
but later redrew is offer and moved to stratford also not so long ago they filmed the hustle there in the hotel resturant bar this appeared a couple of weks ago on the series
best wishes Astonian

Reports locally are that the Scarlet Pimpernel will be converted into a McDonalds. There used to be a McDonalds on Harborne High Street which I thought was very popular but that did not last long

I rem3ember it opening and everyone locally called it "The round pub" very avon garde for its time and quite unlike any pubs seen before.
