The Red Lion, 108 & 109 Brearley Street, Birmingham

Ken_R

master brummie
Does it still exist as a building? Are there any photos of the premises?

I have a 'rellie' that died there in,

wait for it.:smug:

1876.

Just walked down Brearley Street on Google maps, looks like a building still exists at 108 but doesn't look much like a pub!

Would 108 & 109 have been on opposite sides of the street?

i think you mean 108/109 Brearley St West, not Brearley St. Up to 1883 there was Brearley St & Brearley St west. 108 (or sometimes 108/109) was listed as a brewer or beer retailer in the census and irectories. However , after 1884 the two streets were combined and the houses renumbered from consecutive (1,2,3,4..) to odd one side, even the other., and no 108 was renumbered 276 Brearley St. without further research i cannot confirm the name of the beerhosue, but I'm pretty sure this must be it. that part of Brearley st does not exist now, being somewhere under Westthorpe grove/Mosborough crescent area

yes mike you are quite right..the red lion was at brearley st west and ive been trying for ages to find a pic of it..the only part of brearley st that exists now is from newtown row crossing over summer lane and it then finishes at hospital st...

Thanks all. I'm not totally au fait with that part of Brum having lived mainly in the East or South areas.

Lyn, if you find one.......you know where to send it.

ken i very rarely forget the names of pubs that are proving difficult to find...this one has been on my hit list for ages now..will keep em peeled for you..actually there are two red lions i am after..the other one was not far away on the corner of bridge st west and summer lane..demolished early 1920s to make way for bridge st police station...

I've normally forgotten by the following morning.:unconscious:

Another one for the "Does it still exist?"/"Has anyone a photo?" list.

The Vine Inn, 224 Cheapside. I have a 'rellie' that was the gaffer there 1871 - 1891 +

hi ken....i have 2 pics here of 2 vine inn pubs both selling holts beers..the only problem is i have no idea if one of them is the one at cheapside..my guess is one of them is but no way of telling im afraid...
seem to be having a problem posting the pics..will sort it out later on..

Have you posted the photos before, perhaps before "the hack". If so you will need to alter the size a little before it reposts. The forum is recognising the photo as already posted even though it is no longer there.

hi phil...yes i have posted them before..dont really want to resize them anymore as there will be nowt left of them so i am posting via photobucket...

ken here are the 2 vine pub pics..taken in birmingham but i do not have the locations...i seem to recall we did have a talk about one of these pubs and where it might be but my memory has failed on that...
the second pic is dated 1935

Mike is right the first one is on the corner of Francis St & Willis St Nechells, the second one I have listed as The Vine Brookfieds, so that would be around the edge of Hockley / Ladywood somewhere.

ok phil so thats takes pic 2 out of it then...right we are still looking for one of the vine inn cheapside...

It's not mentioned or listed in the 1903 Kelly's, so I would imagine it's going to be hard finding a photo.

Phil
You missed post 3. The beer retailer was renumbered 276 before 1903. It is then run by Samuel Peel. It seems to haev disappeared between 1921 & 1932. It was still called the Red Lion in the 1891 census, but can't speak for after

not sure if you are on about the red lion or the vine inn phil but would think the vine...but yes i reckon both of these pubs will be hard to track down...remember my vine inn ?? was not demolished till 1978 yet it took me 4 years to find a pic of it and ive still only got that one...but you know what my motto is...never say never..

Mike & Lyn

I'm getting myself into a tiz here, I was commenting on the Vine Cheapside that Ken R was asking about, I addressed it in Lyn in error, but thats me all over of late old age is creeping up fast.

oh lol mike and phil...its ok i understand this age thing..its creeping up on me now...but just to recap neither of the 2 pics i posted of the vine pubs are of the vine inn that was at cheapside so the search continues....just going to have a lie down in a darkened room now

Thanks all. It was just a long shot.

Mike, in relation to another thread, where do you get those maps of old Brum?

Blimey. I've found another one now. The Albion Tavern/Inn, 104 Liverpool Street.

Seems I have a 'rellie' that was running that place 1871-1891+ by the name of Charles Hartley.

sounds like your lot were like mine ken..ive got quite a list myself of pubs that rellies ran...we may have more luck with the albion..rings a bell with me..will get back to you if i find any pics...phil may have one as well..

Ken
Charles Hartley was at the albion from December 1870, as can be seen from licensing report below from Birm Post. 2.12.1870
