Im looking for information about the Peacock pub in Darwin st Highgate. Does any one know when it was built and what street number it was. Thanks Robert.
The pub on the corner of Darwin St & Dymoke St, postal address 25 Darwin St was rebuilt in 1935 in a Neo Regency style on the site of an earlier pub of the same name I think.
Phill, thats both good and bad news. The good news. The street number i am looking for is 2 back of 18 so that would not been to far away. The bad news. If along with the pub being redeveloped the whole street may have been as well.
I think most of those back courts in Dymoke St & Darwin St were original. I would say they were certainly built before 1935. I had a mate in the 60's who lived in a back court in Dymoke st quite close to the Peacock.
As I said I assume that the houses around the rebuilt pub were there pre 1935 as they looked older. But when I used to be down that way in the 60's I wasn't taking a lot of notice of architecture. But if I had to make a choice I would say that they were older than the pub.
I will see if I can come up with a photo of the older pub. I'm sure I have seen one somewhere.
I worked in the flats opposite last year , the tennants told me the pub , which was already closed was being used as a cannabis farm , resulting in a few arrests and the farm being shut down Bernie
