the old oak

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
hi pub crawlers
can any-body tell me any think about the the old oak pub on pershore rd stirchley it seems abit drab of a pub but just of late they are pulling in i know at one time they did have a good darts and domino team
but it always looked shabby does any body know when it was first built
i can only imagine what type of clientele go there
by the number of roofers vans and builders vans that fill the car park now

Hi Astonian and Lloyd

Don't be judging a book by its cover - though in this case the exterior is an excellent example of the period.

I last went in around 18 months ago. It is true that there are some roughnecks in the bar but there is plenty to enjoy in this building.

Around five years ago, a couple from Bournville took on the lease. They pulled up the carpet in the lounge and painfully restored the beautiful parqeut floor - quite wonderful.

There is also a surviving dumb waiter which I believe was still in use.

This couple tried to restore the fortunes of the pub and put on real ales and decent food. The place did enjoy a bit of a renaissance. I think however that they have moved on so I am not sure what the place is like today.

Another great feature is the bowling green and the pavilion - one of the best in Brum. You can see where there was another bowling green but this was converted into a children's play area.

Overall though, on my last visit, I had some nice beer and enjoyed looking around, avoiding the bar where an air of malevolence was prevalent.

Cheers
Kieron

The last time i visited i also found the lounge inviting and as it was cold outside it was quite pleasant to sit in front of a real fire. I haven't been lately but i should think that there are worse places to visit than the oak.

My first job in 1975 was in the sausage factory across the road and it was really a treat to pop into the bar of a lunchtime for a pint of mild which would send me a bit tipsy to be honest at such a young age.
The bar in 1975/76 looked like it hadn't been toched since the fifties and there were two very friendly barmaids who looked like they'd probably worked there since the place opened in the 20's !.....i loved it and sometimes find myself in Stirchley for nostalgic reasons.
I should pop in if i were you, i always like a pub with a bit of an edge to it anyway!.
