The Old Meeting House

Charlie

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
From Mr. B.A. Porter's scrap book, dated Feb. 9th 1940:

"This Old Meeting House was built on the site of the one burnt down in the riots of 1791. Probably its most famous minister was the Rev. Hugh Hutton. He published (in 1830) a small volume of 'Poetical Pieces', chiefly of a devotional character, and not unpleasing. The most dramatic moment of Hugh Hutton's life was when he opened with prayer the huge Newhall Hill meeting during the Reform Bill agitation. B.R. Haydon made portrait studies of persons connected with the movement, and chose that moment to be the subject of a great historical picture. It was never painted. The sketches perished in the Library fire."

More to follow from the scrapbook - consisting of the writings of Mr. Bernard A. Porter to/for The Birmingham Post and Journal in the 1930s. Mostly re Handsworth and Handsworth Wood. Mr. Porter lived at 23 Handsworth Wood Road and died in 1940. He was a member of F.R.I.B.A. (Fellow of the Royal Institute of Birmingham Architects?)
