The Norelands Erdington Birmingham

Samuel Downing was a very successful self made business man, ironmaster and philanthropist who lived at The Norelands Edington. I have tried to research The Norelands but cannot find any reference to it or any photographs. I presume it was a large Victorian residence now demolished. Does anyone have any information or know if there are any photographs of the house? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello

Thank you for replying. In Samuel Downing's obituary it states the Richmond ironworks was at Brick House Lane, Hill Top. I do not know if this is near Great Bridge. Does Brick House Lane, Hill Top help you with my initial inquiry?

It appears that it is the Samuel Downing from Richmond Ironworks. He has Norlands as an address in 1887 when he lost notes and cheques of between £1,700 and £1,880.
Also when he died in 1900.

Thank you for this information. I am assuming Norlands was a large Victorian house. Do you know where it was or if it is still there?

Sale 1878.
Commands extensive views over 0scott, Barr Beacon and Sutton Park, 10 mins to Erdington and Chester Road stations.

He is reported to have died at Norlands (attached). A map below shows the position. It became the Nprlands maternioty home around WW1 and later Lyndhurst school, when it was numbered no 78 Sutton Road. The photo comes from later, and is presumably the same building, though likely altered

In 1851/61 he and his father were nail makers in Rowley Regis. By 1871 he was Ironmaster in West Bromwich.

May have moved to Norlands at the sale in 1878.
