The Ivy House. I can’t give a date for this one. John Lyster seems to be the landlord. Viv.

Here is a map from 1889, showing Spring Road (Spring Row on 1861 census), together with Spring Row, and the Ivy House Pub on the corner of Soho Street at the bottom of the map.Spring Row.jpg

Great thanks Judy. Even the water trough in the photo is helpfully marked on the map. So this is today’s view. Obviously rebuilt and extended.

Summer Road must have become Ivy Road in later times.

The Ivy House in 1907 (from Handsworth Historical Society). The horse trough was still there at this time. And there’s weighing scales outside the side entrance (right).

I worked for about 6 months at the DHSS modern building opposite but just can’t remember this pub. That would have been around 1971. Viv.

The building to the right of this pub looks like what used to be Mottershead and Smith, the Ford Salesroom and Garage. My first job was there back in 1966 as an Accounts junior. I went to the DHSS offices opposite to get my National Insurance number. I loved that job or was it perhaps my first pay packet on the Friday that I loved! Little brown envelope filled with notes and coins! Happy days. Jen
