Hi Zena

To my knowledge there has never been a pub in Holte St called The Globe, in fact I think in my lifetime the only pub that was in Holte St was the Old Union Mill Inn on the corner of Heneage St until they converted part of the old Holt brewery into a pub and I think that was called the Holt at first and it's now called the Gosta Green. Are you sure you don't meam the Globe on the corner Manchester & Blews St?

Hi phil I have the address from the marriage certificate of the sister of my great grandfather. her husband has it as his address

Hi Zena,

What was the date on the marriage certificate, as I was only speaking of within living memory (my lifetime) if there is a date then we could dig a bit deeper. Though I don't think it would have been the Gosta Green because as far as I am aware it was part of the old Holt brewery before it was a pub.

Cert says 1910 have just checked census 1901 and arthur simms son living with ellen simms licenee victullar 107 and 8 holt street but it dosnt say its a pub

Zena

In 1903 The was a Horse & Groom public house at 95 Holt St and at 107 there was a Mrs Ellen Simms beer retailer which could very well have been your Globe. The only way that I suppose you could check for sure is if one our kind members would check the census for you as this might confirm that this was the place you seek.

Sorry Zena

I was typing the same time as yourself, it looks as if 107 was the place, a beer retailer could have been a beer house that wasn't fully licensed and was unable to sell spirits and wines. They are very rarely named in the directories under the listing of pubs and inns.
