hi all. can anyone find out for me who ran the globe pub 35 blews st newtown between 1901 and 1929. ive had no luck. my dads mom was taken in be the owners of the pub when her parents died and it was there she gave birth to my dad in 1929. as far as he remembers his mom said it was ran by henry or george doyle. thanks everyone. wales.

Hi Wales,

All I can tell you is in Kelly's 1903 The Globe wasn't listed as a PH, but Lewis Miles at No 35 (the number of the Globe) was listed as a Beer Retailer.

In 1913 James Thomas was listed at The Globe PH 35 Blews St.

I'm afraid I can't get you up to 1929.

Phil

The nearest I can get at is the following:
Globe Inn, 35 Blews Street
1921 Philip R Davis
1933 Frederick K Dalloway
Peter

Hi Wales,
My info tells me:-

Manager in 1921 = P.R. Davis. F. Dallaway in 1944
but no info between these dates. Hope it helps?

First pub I ever went into to have a drink, 14 or 15 years old at the time, pint of bitter which lasted me all night, 4 or 5 of us all underage drinkers playing darts, there was almost no one in there, so I think we were the only trade they had some evenings.......

hi aston lad such a shame about this pub as its lovely inside especially its wooden carved bar but its been up for sale for ages now...my brothers dominos team now have to play their home games from the clements which is round the corner...

HI ASTON LAD
I Recall the old globe pub i only went in there twice in my life i worked in henry corbetts with my other two younger brother,s
our oldest kid brother bill worked in the midland dairy arond in baggot street ; he was the yard forman;he lived in that pub virtualy at every given time
lunch times and when he finished work he was not alocholic but it was the one arm banditt he was addicted two spent a fortune on it
almost his wages his wife used to go barmy at him ;we all told him but he would not listen bless is soul he ased away two years ago now
i always thought it was a run down pubbecause it was never rvamped in those dys of yester years the only revamp they ever bothered with was to repaint the exterior out side painting the wood work ; i was never impressed with it, best wishes Astonian;;

what with cheap supermarket beer and no smoking rules and other forms of entertainment/amusement pubs have lost their attraction, hence pubs closing everywhere - no customers means no money so pub shuts !!! Times are forever changing. Eric

totally agree with you eric...plus the fact that this particular pub is now so isolated...its off the main newtown row drag and where once it was surrounded by houses there are now only offices and factories...its been going down hill for years now..such a shame...

There's a grim inevitability about these pub closures; I walked past the Globe on one of my day-trips from London last month, and was struck by its rather bleak location. Astoness - How many of the 15 pubs on Summer Lane that you list on another thread remain open? I dimly recall drinking in one on the right-hand side from Snow Hill, near the Council offices, around 1983. I intend to explore this area on my trip.

hi viewfinder...only 3 summer lane pubs remain all the rest have been demolished..the royal george which was gutted a couple of years back and i believe it was to be turned into some sort of eating place but still remains closed..

the barrel...which has been slowly gutted over the past 3 years..i was able to talk to the owner a few months back and due to lack of funds it will be a slow job but he is hoping to re open it as a pub..

the stag which is the only remaining pub on the lane that is still pulling pints...recently been taken over but from the info i have its now more of a night club and does not open in the day...

so very sad to see the massive demise of our pub trade..

When I first moved to Newtown, I met a young Irish barmaid, Gemma in the Clements Arm and she was in lodgings at the Globe. We used to have some great "after hours" in the Globe. Yet another great girl I let get away..:sorrow:

I used to go to the Globe occasionally when the Black Diamond folk club was there in the upstairs room. I think there was a problem with fire regulations and the club had to move. This must be a problem for these old pubs as the upstairs rooms don't have fire escapes.

unfortunately the globe will never become a pub again but the clements is still pulling pints....under new management again..previous manager who before having the clements had the king o the road is i believe trying his luck in spain

It was as far as I remember - wasn't it known as the 'flea pit'? I'm sure there's a picture on another thread somewhere.

Sorry, just re-read my post and realised that it looked as thought I meant the same building. I think The Globe cinema was at the top of the High Street, Newtown around where the Barton's Arms is and the Globe pub was nearer to the city.

Thanks Penelope, I thought there was a Globe cinema and yes it was a flea pit (so was the nearby 'Newtown' picture house. Sorry to be off thread. Eric
