The Forge Hammer pub, 84 Bilston Road

Hi folks,

My 3rd query on this site - you have magnificently informed the other two, can you do the same for this one?!

The 1881 census shows my relative Joseph Dyehouse as a Beer House Keeper at "The Forge Hammer". The address given is 84 Bilston Road. Can anyone offer any information on this pub? Again a search on the site has revealed nothing yet.

Thanks,

amdyh

A further note... The Forge Hammer appears at WV4 6JT on Google Maps, but the name disappears as you zoom in. It seems as though it may have been at the rear of a couple of houses...

In the 1887 directory of the Wines Spirit Trades brewers and Maltster there is a
Dyehouse Joseph 84 Bilston St Wolverhampton

The 1880 Kellys also gives the same entry as horsencart
Hitchmough’s black country pubs lists the following about the Forge hammer:
It had a beerhouse licence. In 1872 . William Latham was lamdlord in 1874 and Joseph Dyehouse from at least 1879-1900.
The pub is not shown on maps and I have no street directory of Wolverhampton that enables me to place the pub, but it is
possible to work it out from the named pubs which have numbers which are listed, and this shows that the Forge hammer was on the corner of Brunswick St, as shown in red on the c 1888 map attached. The building, or at least one of the same shape was on the site on the c 1956 map, so there is a reasonable chance you may get a picture of the building somewhere

Thanks mikejee! I found quite a few pics online then realised I'd been looking in slightly the wrong place. I've now found it on Googlemaps - it's still there, or at least it was when Google van passed, but it appears in a sorry state and boarded up. I can now compare your map with the current situation and see if theres a match!

Ah. Now I've compared maps, I realise that The Forge Hammer Pub I have found in photos is on Spring Road (A4126) - and is quite a way from Bilston Road itself. As much as I'd like to think it's the pub run by my ancestor - it appears unlikely. Here's a pic of the one I found.
