Photographs of construction in Birmingham are hard to find so I thought I would post this nice example in South Yardley. The scene is the Stockfield Road end of Waterloo Road. The shop featured is simply called The Emporium and is selling newspapers and fancy goods. The gap is being in-filled with some additional housing and the men are enjoying a mini-break whilst posing for the photographer. A small advert board reveals that the piping was installed by the plumber Anthony Smith of Stockfield Road. Notice the men in white on the first floor - they are stood next to the stone that tells us the building is called Roland Buildings. The adjacent development would be called Waterloo Buildings. I only found that out when I went to visit the site to see how things look today. I have merged the photographs so you can compare them. I think I prefer the view of around 1905-7. What do you think?
Cheers
