The Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur

The Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur, is this a normal award to a British Soldier?

I have in my family tree a

EVETTS, William Alfred, (1895/1983)
Major (Retired),
M.C., Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur.

At some point it would seem he was awarded
the Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur,

Not sure if it was during the Great War or in between wars.

Kind regards.
