The Bombs That Changed Britain Tonight

Having watched the first programme the thing that struck me was the described inhumanity shown by the Public Assistance Board to the initial homeless people, being termed Native, Refugee and Immigrant.

I wonder how they faired in Birmingham?
 
Programme two, another interesting and sad tale of the effects of war on the people of Hull. Birmingham gets a mention as, along with Hull, it was used to study the effect of bombing on the morale of the people.
 
The fourth programme looks at the bombing of Bristol, and again mentions an affect of the bombing that is not generally talked about.

The Portway Tunnel was used by civilians that were in fear of their lives, and yet they were described by the South West Civil Defence Chief, Sir Hugh Jamieson Elles, as a gypsy encampment filled with junk. He arranged that the tunnel would be handed over to the BBC as a possible emergency centre in the case of the London centre being bombed. The civilians resisted and were ejected by police with truncheons....
