Which was of course Jacket Potatoes...
The ones I have in mind were sold at the bottom of Corporation St and New St, just by the ramp.
I loved mine with loads of salt on, in fact, I can think of no better supper on a cold winters night than a small cone shaped bag of potatoes.
Another bonus was standing by the Oven which when the weather was really bad acted just like a brazier.
As old Del boy said..'Luvverly Jubberly'
I wasn't so keen on those Chestnut thingies though, to me it was like eating a Conker, still, horses for course eh? :shock: :alcoholic:
 
Spuds-Nuts and the Braziers

Oh Kandor the memories you have raised to mind.
It was just prior to going to serve God and Country for the requiste two years, had been eighteen months but they raised it in time for me. I had been to the Gaumont Cinema and on coming out went to one of the barrows with the firebox thereon and tossed up whether to have spuds or nuts.
I chose the nuts and failed to fully remove the shell off one and in the dark the thing cracked my tooth.
Being the hero I was, I decided it would serve no purpose going to the dentist.
For two years I sufferred that tooth. I can recall lying in my bunk in the billet at night with it throbbing away. Mind over matter and a hard suck on it and the nerve seemed to be dragged out and resited inside the tooth on stopping the suction - then bliss until the next time.
When I finally had to have it dealt with at the Dental Hospital, which was somewhere by Great Charles Street the things simply shatterred it was so rotten.
Oh why didn't I chose the spuds............
 
There was another barrow on the corner of Bull Street and Temple Row and they were both owned by the same company, who also owned the hot dog barrows.
