THE ARTIC STAR

I saw on TV yesterday that seaman who served on the Artic convoys to Russia in WW2 were presented with a new medal the Artic Star, and that descendants could claim their father's medal by writing to the MOD. Ray's dad served on these convoys - he was a regular in the Navy joining about 1924/26 and although we have the names of various ships and submarines he served on, we do not have his service number. Has anyone any ideas how we could get this number and then perhaps his service records and the new medal?

Thanks Cromwell, will write to Royal Navy Records Centre in Hayes first, but for anyone else eligible for the new Arctic Emblem the following is the address to write to:-

The Defence Service Secretary Honours 1,
Ministry of Defence
Level 8,
Zone J,
Main Building
London
SW1A 2HB

Isn't it blooming marvellous that these
gallant hero's have to await 60 odd
years before getting this recognition
half the poor guy's are no longer with us :( >:(

My family is currently applying for thr Artic Star on behalf of my mother whose brother Christopher Walton went down on the S S River Afton. He was RN Convoy signalman to Commodore Dowding. He was crossing from Nova Scotia to Russia as part of covoy PQ17. The Admirality on hearing that there were U boats in the area ordered the covoy to scatter allowing easy merchant targets to the U boats.
